Admirable film.
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
This romantic comedy is based on the 1953 Audrey Hepburn classic movie entitled Roman Holiday.Mandy Moore stars in it as the 18-year old daughter of the President of the United States who wants to attain independence.Included in the cast are Matthew Goode,Jeremy Piven,Annabella Sciorra,Caroline Goodall and Mark Harmon.Anna Foster has lived a privilege life and has always been in the public eye especially after her father,James Foster was elected as President which kept her in constant presence of the Secret Service. Then during the family's trip to Europe, she managed to escape the agents and went into a trip of her own.During her brief time alone, she meets and falls in love with Ben,a British boy with whom she kept her social status secret. Both enjoyed a great time together.Later, she finds out the real identity of Ben and what he is all about.Obviously, the movie does not escape formula in the sense that everything becomes clichéd and predictable until the end.Too bad that the story becomes somewhat unfocused as the story progresses.Mandy Moore tried to do her best but her charm and appeal isn't enough to make it a more-than-an-average movie.Only young viewers particularly kids and pre-teens will surely enjoy it.
If you had asked me 8 years ago I would have rated this movie as average. But now, with a world full of films falling under a rom-com banner and filled with so-so performances.. This one is underrated. It would definitely rate closer to 8 in todays light. Looking back, the performances are quirky and bright. There are some enjoyable subplots with the second set of agents and the travelling Brit. The actors for the most part have moved onto much bigger roles. The scenes in Europe were accurate. None of blatant clichés that plague post card movies. Of course there is some un-believability and type- casting..but to great effect. The sound track is one of the better ones around, and the vistas were well captured on film. What have you got to lose? Go enjoy it
Forgive the pun, but Matthew Goode made all the difference between this film and "First Daughter" with Katie Holmes and Mark Blucas which are basically exactly the same in terms of plot. I believe "Chasing Liberty" came out first although in the same year (2004).The stunning locations in which they filmed Chasing Liberty can not be overlooked: Venice is a real treat in any movie, but add a bit of innocence and romance and you have a winning formula. Prague is absolutely beautiful, the epitome of European architecture and the excellence of Austrian country side goes without saying. To all this add Berlin and London and you can't go wrong. An excellent mixture in the cast between Americans and British, special note to the ones playing Italian characters, they did a superb job. So, location, cast, and script are all superb, but Matthew Goode with his boyish charm, sexy accent and wonderful good looks took it all. I totally agree with a previous reviewer, that he can go on to become a real star and easily fill in the shoes of the next Bond when Daniel Craig tires of it. And what a Bond he would make!! To all the girls out there, watch Chasing Liberty with your girlfriends, not boyfriends. You will truly enjoy this light chick flick and sigh to your hearts content.
Entertaining teen flick about the daughter of the President of the USA. This girl is not spoiled or snobby, no, so there's not the typical cliché. The problem with her is that she can't enjoy her liberty at full because all of the events that surround her father's "Job".Everything changes for her when she travels to Europe and decides to escape to chase her liberty. She there meets one of her father's private investigators and there a typical movie romance starts. But the events of the movie are really entertaining and also suggest a message for those girls who are chasing their liberty or whatever.I caught this movie on HBO about two years ago and I enjoyed it pretty much mainly because of Mandy Moore's unique on-screen charisma and her beauty. Also, the story has enough elements to be considered as entertaining and funny.I recommend this movie for those who can enjoy light humor and some clichés from teen flicks.
