Age of the Dragons

Age of the Dragons is an adaptation of Herman Melville's classic novel Moby Dick. Set in a medieval realm where Captain Ahab and crew hunt dragons for the vitriol that powers their world, Ishmael, a charismatic harpooner and his friend Queequeg join their quest. Ahab's adopted daughter Rachel, beautiful and tough, runs the hunting vessel. Ahab's obsession to seek revenge on a great White Dragon that slaughtered his family when he was young and left his body scarred and mauled, drives the crew deeper into the heart of darkness. In the White Dragon's lair Ahab's secrets are revealed and Rachel must choose between following him on his dark quest or escaping to a new life with Ishmael.

Highly Overrated But Still Good

I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.

This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.

There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes

Reworking of classic novel 'Moby Dick' but this time using dragons as the game or hunt as it were. To be honest this is a really neat little idea, the only problem is its been made poorly which is a shame.I think this could of worked had a little more time and money been invested, the cast are OK I guess...for an action type film. Danny Glover is a little miscast as Ahab perhaps but Vinnie Jones does surprisingly well as does the hero Sevier as Ishmael. Nothing to rave about of course but the cheesiness of it all suits them fine and you know to expect ham.Of course the effects are slightly off-key, CGI is average but shows promise, even the use of old stop motion techniques used by Harryhausen are utilised at one point which almost works (oddly it looked better in the old mythology films of Harryhausen). Then you do have silly things which needed more planning such as the Pequod as a wheeled land tank/ship thingy. This didn't really work as it was way too small looking, it was like the Tardis, small on the outside yet apparently huge on the inside with about eight adults living in it with lots of quarters shown! plus how did it run? petrol? diesel? someone pedaling below? I must also mention my dislike of virtually everyone in action films these days being some kind of martial arts expert and able to defeat multiple enemies without breaking sweat. It really is so over used and in this film its so out of place, what's wrong with some good old fashioned fisticuffs?A nice idea but the execution is weak, worth checking out if you like dragon flicks though...I guess, not much else going for it.3/10

I was actually sort of intrigued if somewhat dubious, but no matter how bad I thought it could've gone, I honestly was not expecting it to be this bad, almost Dungeons & Dragons bad. I am not going to detail how far it deviates from Moby Dick, you can tell from the plot summary it is going to, and I am going to judge Age of the Dragons on its own merits. Age of the Dragons sadly doesn't have many good merits, if any at all. The landscapes and scenery are reasonably good in scale but dully lit, lacking a true sense of wonder. The editing is choppy, while the dragon effects are not bad as such but nothing to be thrilled about either as the dragons themselves actually aren't used very well at all. The music lacks sparkle and feels sluggish, but it was the story, characters and especially the script that sank Age of the Dragons further. The characters are more irritating than engaging and have resorted to fantasy clichés rather than the complex characters of the original story. The story is slow and predictable, with the action scenes the anti-thesis of thrilling and the fantasy elements lacking imagination. The script is terrible, one of the worst scripts of any film recently, consisting of corny, stilted dialogue and just very humourless and stiff in tone. The acting fares little better, the main female is a small bright spot because she is hot and her acting doesn't rely too much on it. Vinnie Jones however is very bland, while Danny Glover, other than the premise the main selling-point of me seeing Age of the Dragons in the first place, chews the scenery to pieces and in the end it was painful to watch him. Overall, a right medieval muddle, humourless, unimaginative, predictable, clichéd and dull, everything a fantasy/adventure movie should not be. 1/10 Bethany Cox

Age of the Dragons is set in a mythical land a long time ago where a young man named Ishmael (Corey Sevier) joins a team of Dragon hunters, the scarred Ahab (Danny Glover) runs the show & is out on a personal quest of vengeance to find & kill the Great White Dragon that killed his sister & left him horribly burnt when he was a child. Ishmael becomes a harpooner as they travel deeper into the dark realms of the Dragons in search of their ultimate prize, however as they team of hunters near their goal tensions break out & secrets are revealed that put everyone at risk. Finally Ahab & his men reach the liar of the Great White Dragon & with on revenge on his mind he sets out to kill it & abolish his own personal demons...Directed by Ryan Little this is an odd film, basically the script by producer McKay Daines is an adaptation of the Herman Melville novel Moby Dick but has it's Captain Ahab looking for a Dragon rather than a Whale but otherwise it's fairly faithful to it's literary source with many of the character's present & correct with the same names. Unfortunately Age of the Dragons just isn't very good, when I first heard of Age of the Dragons it sounded like a Sy-Fy Channel film but this tries to be 100% serious & spends more time trying to be a human drama rather than a fantasy film. One suspects that Age of the Dragons was trying too hard to follow the novel & not trying to be a good film in it's own right, for a start I found it incredibly boring & dull with constant arguments between the various crew as tensions take their toll but I didn't spend 90 minutes watching a film called Age of the Dragons to see people with funny names arguing about things I can't relate to. Also am I the only one who noticed that Captain Ahab here was played by Danny Glover who is black & his main prey is called the Great White Dragon? I mean I am just wondering there's meant to be some sort of subtle racist subtext going on here? Or maybe not. The dialogue is stiff, there's no humour & the character's are far too one dimensional, there's supposed to be a couple of twist's but they have no great impact & the lack of any decent action mean sitting through Age of the Dragons is a real chore. One thing going for Age of the Dragons is that it look quite nice, the widescreen cinematography & open landscapes means this is visually quite good. The sets, costumes & special effects are also surprisingly good. It's just a shame the film otherwise is so boring. While not the best CGI computer effects ever put on film the Dragons look alright, I've certainly seen worse, a lot worse. The lack of gore or significant action doesn't help & neither does the leaden pace & plot. The huge metal boat looking thing on wheels looks a little daft but it's easy enough to understand what it represents & why it's included.Apparently filmed in Utah, the main aspect that jumps out about Age of the Dragons is the cast with Danny Glover in the lead even though he doesn't make his first appearance until about thirty minutes into the film while British football hard-man Vinnie Jones looks like he is getting desperate already if he is accepting roles like this although to be fair to him he had the good sense to get killed off within the first twenty minutes so has nothing more than an extended cameo.Age of the Dragons is a surprisingly close reworking of Moby Dick that could have done with going it's own way, Dragons instead of a Whale sounds cool but it isn't. It looks good & is well made but, well, for Moby Dick fans only who want to see a different take on the tale.

I'm used to seeing Syfy originals with fluffy script, pedantic acting, unimaginative imagery, and plastic feel. Age of the Dragons, in my opinion, is in the top tier, and arguably the best Syfy original I've ever seen. Plot lines and character development are mature. The script is intellectual, most of the acting matches feature-film levels, and the CG effects are solidly believable. Danny Glover is excellent. Sofia Pernas is eye-grabbing. Atmosphere flows convincingly. Morphing Moby Dick into a dragon hunt really worked for me. The only thing which wasn't explained is how the land boat was powered. Still, that's a small complaint. I enjoyed this fantasy film, it was worth my time.
