One of my all time favorites.
Unshakable, witty and deeply felt, the film will be paying emotional dividends for a long, long time.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Always a likable supporting player in films such as 'Predator', 'Death Hunt' and 'Rocky', this film was an attempt to turn Carl Weathers into a leading action star and he delivers well here, but it is no surprise to discover that the film failed to propel his career. In addition to Weathers, the supporting cast is bursting with talent from the likes of Robert Davi, Thomas F. Wilson and Sharon Stone, but the plot is very second rate and always comes second to over-the-top stunts such as Weathers somersaulting over the top of a speeding car (!). Craig T. Nelson feels a tad miscast as the chief antagonist too, never all that charismatic, villainous or foreboding, though the film's biggest drawback is its fusion of comedy within the action plot. At the best of times, the film is laugh-out-loud funny with a particularly memorable scene in which a drunken Vanity keeps making quips with sexual innuendo as she takes a nighttime drive with Weathers, not to mention a petty thief who amusingly keeps fainting in the opening few minutes, but the comedy side of the film too often takes a back-seat to the rather formulaic weeding out corruption angle with Nelson. Weathers does get some great one-liners though and there is a very neat scene transition between Weathers commenting a barbecue, blowing a bad guy away and a barbecue firing up in the very next scene. More cleverness like this would have helped the film along. 'Action Jackson' is, however, highly watchable as it is as long as one does not think too much about the unrealistic stunts and by-the-numbers plot.
Action Jackson is an overlooked action classic that lives up to its name. As awesome as 80's cinema was, black action heroes were scarce. The blaxsploitation era has gone and stars like Wesley Snipes and Denzel Washington have not made their mark yet. To fill that void, enter Carl Weathers to deliver a tough, cool performance as Detroit supercop Jericho "Action" Jackson. Opposite Carl Weathers is Craig T Nelson as auto tycoon Peter Dellaplane, who brings his A game here as an excellent villain. This is the directorial debut of Craig R Baxley who worked as action/stunt director with Weathers on Predator. Baxley delivers action galore and keeps it fast and loose with lots of one liners, fights and explosions. Also from Predator, Bill Duke appears as a police superior and Sonny Landham appears as a dope dealer. For good looks we have an early performance from Sharon Stone and also singer Vanity. Action Jackson has all the action that fans of the genre need and Carl Weathers did a hell of a job as the lead in this film.
I have to agree with the other IMDb members who find this movie absolutely absurd. This is nothing more than an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the Apollo Creed character developed by Carl Weathers in "Rocky". The fact that this film was named after an action figure doll from the early 70's says it all. The stunts are just plain ridiculous (Jackson leaping over a speeding car head-on and also chasing a speeding car on foot and catching up to it) are just so far-fetched that it gets insulting. Craig T Nelson seems too bland as a villain and the plot is so weak that the action can't even carry it. Also worthy of note is the purse-snatcher who faints every time he lays eyes on Jackson. It's no wonder a sequel was never attempted. Mindless idiocy and a waste of quality movie time!
Dumb but fun '80s actioner with a rare starring role for Carl Weathers. He plays the title character, a tough Detroit cop obsessed with bringing down wealthy psychopath Craig T. Nelson. Weathers is great, with lots of cool one-liners and macho swagger to spare. For his part, villainous Nelson is appropriately evil and gets to bed young Sharon Stone and Vanity, officially making him the king of all studs. Speaking of Sharon and Vanity, they both appear naked in this, which is reason enough to recommend it. Also features support from Bill Duke, Robert Davi, and Biff from the Back to the Future movies. If you're a fan of '80s action movies, cheese and all, you'll surely like this one.
