Robot Jox

50 years after a nuclear war, the two superpowers handle territorial disputes in a different way. Each fields a giant robot to fight one-on-one battles in official matches, each piloted by a man inside, known as robot jockeys or jox. The contest for possession of Alaska will be fought by two of the best. The conscientious Achilles fights for the Americans. Opposing him is a Russian, Alexander.

As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.

Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.

Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.

For some odd reason, this film is rated pretty low. But don't let that deter you for a second. In recent years, especially video games, the word "Mech" has become a buzz word. Numerous games out there feature giant robotic, mechanical battle suits that allow players to hop inside and fight. Back in the early 90s, director Stuart Gordon along with producer Charles Band, set out to make a neat story about athletes who compete in robot battles. Acting is pretty good. The human sub-story isn't all that interesting. But the real selling points would be the remarkable stop-motion robot effects. They are seamless and fluid. Each battle soon turns into a grueling fiasco as the robots tear each other apart. And who couldn't agree with the last line of the movie: "We can both live!" So please gentle viewers and/or Mech fans, hunt down this under-appreciated classic!

If you're going to make a cheap and cheesy post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi flick, set fifty years after a devastating nuclear war and revolving on political disputes being resolved through giant robotic fights, then you better do it right and make sure it's completely 100% over-the-top and absurd. This is what I missed in "Robot Jox", actually. The idea is totally bonkers, but the film's elaboration and overall tone is rather weighty and even a bit dramatic. At least, that's how I interpreted it. I've seen enough post-nuclear popcorn flicks to know that they should feature lunatic supportive characters as well as flamboyant vehicles and absurd set pieces. This movie has two robots, … and that's it. Apparently Stuart Gordon meant for his film to be a lot more light- headed and clichéd, but ran into artistic differences with the scriptwriter who had ambitions for something a little more sophisticated. See, I don't get that. You're talking to Stuart Gordon here! The man directed two of the coolest 80's horror flicks, namely "Re-Animator" and "From Beyond". Let him do whatever the hell he wants; he probably knows best! The rudimentary idea of "Robot Jox" is downright awesome. I'm sure everyone remembers the tense finale of James Cameron's "Aliens", when Ripley battles the extraterrestrial monster from inside a gigantic mechanical device that mimics her movements? Well, "Robot Jox" pretty much copies that idea and turns it into a 90 minute movie. After WWIII, only the Western Union and Russian Confederation remained, but at least they're no longer sacrificing the lives of human beings in wars when they encounter a conflict. Whenever there's something at stake like, say, the state of Alaska, there's a showdown between two hi-tech equipped robots and their intensively trained jockeys or "jox". The last fight ended inconclusive, as one of the robots tripped over and crushed 300 spectators, but the American jockey refuses to replay the match. The organization wants to replace him with a genetic clone, but she might not be able to defeat the notorious Russian jockey Alexander. The story somehow wants us to have empathy for the slowly (very slowly, actually) developing romance Achilles and the cloned chick, but that's less than interesting. The best parts of the film include Paul Koslo as a mad- raving Russian deliberately crushing people with a robotic foot, and even that footage should have been crazier! Oh well, at least it's still much better than Michael Bay's version of "Transformers".

They're called Robot Jox ? why ? why would you name a movie Robot Jox ? I understand the connection with JOX and JOCKS (possibly) but what's even worse is that the movie centers around maybe two or three people who control these mechanized warrior-bots in order to keep Alaska an American state ? who the hell thought of this ? OK, OK, it's post WWIII and war has been outlawed, but come on ! ALASKA ???? Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of good things about Alaska...but don't you think that California, or New York might have been a better state to fight for ? Either that, or the winner of the ROBOT BATTLES could have won control over the totality of the North-American Continent ? This movie seems to have premiered at a bad time, especially when America was becoming sick of Robotech and Voltron in the 1980s. Maybe that's why the studio went bankrupt on it. . .I honestly think this movie could trigger a bi-polar disorder in anyone who decides to watch it. Although the special effects were limited at the time the movie was made, it doesn't make up for how insignificant they make the situations and the characters seem. There is literally nothing to stimulate the viewer whatsoever in this film and I think that carries on into the emotions of the audience greatly. . .meaning that movies like this are usually on in the background when someone commits suicide in their house. . .in front of the TV. Whether or not the movie causes people to to put an end to their existence is not proved, but it appears to be highly suspect.I swear, the movie is devoid of stimuli. . .I sincerely hope someone edits out all the robot battles and replaces them with muted scenes of angry rottweilers.I've actually heard that the movie itself in VHS/DVD format smells like festering haunches. . .really ! It may be the only film EVER in physical form to give off an odor similar to stew meat. That's the real Sci-Fi feel of this movie, not that it has stimulating content, but rather, it has a stench of unknown origin that may baffle even the most modern scientist. If you've seen this film within the last three years, I'm guessing you're still scraping the the pizza rolls out of your favorite tank-top. Lay off the pizza rolls, lay off the movie.

OK this movie had a terrible premise. Be serious according to the movie they had just been through an apocalyptic war yet they have money to buy huge robots and pit them against each other. Each country decides instead of investing into rebuilding their country they would rather fight with robots no one could afford. Here's a better idea, lets rely on our most inept resource, jocks, to fight our battles. Everyone says what about the director, what about him. He makes a good movie, he makes a bad movie. There is no reason to give this movie some credit just because of the director, maybe he was asleep? I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, because it was so cheesy and ridiculous I had to laugh. I actually had a good time watching it, well except for the cowboy mentor who turns out to be an assassin(trust me no one would see this guy as an assassin, so it is a surprise, however lame) What kind of training exercise is a jungle jim anyway. I was sad to see Mst3k had not done this one. I am giving a two star rating however because nothing could be as bad as "manos the hands of fate."The budget does not matter either, I have seen plenty of reasonable movies that had nothing for budgets like cube. The storyline was not even plausible and I have seen better acting in school plays. Surly they could have afforded an eleven year old from any middle school play.Anyway pick it up, it is a fun movie to watch.
