hyped garbage
In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
The storyline, entertaining trip from Hamburg to Istanbul and the performance of the cast appealed to me.Charming Bleibtreu travels from Hamburg to Istanbul to find love. The questions: Will he be able to find it? Will he find it as he expected? The journey from Hamburg to Istanbul is an adventure, that includes traveling in a lorry, ship and a stolen car. During traveling Bleibtreu and Paul meet strange, interesting and harmful ppl. They also enjoy new cultures.Bleibtreu plays very well. He is especially successful while he is showing his feelings for the Turkish angel. His performance was also outstanding as he having conversations with Paul. Üner plays also great. She lets the audience believe she is an angel.Even though the end was predictable, I enjoyed watching this movie. Yes, you predict what will happen in the end. But you just don't know how it will happen. And you want to see it. However continuously sth surprising happens. Thats why you can be surprised all the time.If you want to have a sweet trip from Hamburg to Istanbul, give this movie a try!
I think some people missed what this movie was also about. It was not just a romantic comedy, but was a story about the growth of a single individual. We have Daniel, a nebbish soon-to-be school teacher, who in the beginning of the movie has no control over his class and just stands there not knowing what to do. In the scene with his neighbor we see the same thing. On his way home from work he chances upon a street vendor, Juli, who secretly loves him as she sees him almost every day on his walk home, and who convinces him to buy a Sun ring, and that this ring will bring him good luck and a woman wearing the sun symbol will be his true love. She also gives him a ticket to a street event where she plans to meet up with him, wearing a dress with the sun symbol. Of course he meets up with someone else, since Juli is late, wearing clothing with the same symbol and they strike up a friendship. Keep in mind that he would not have talked with his woman had he not believed in the prophecy. What we have to put aside is the fact that this timid young man would all at once become more bold. This is where the magic and fantasy plays into the plot and it works. I had no problem putting aside the plausibility that one moment we have someone who would never be so bold and the next we do. Of course his "love" is heading back to Turkey and our hero has decided that he will follow (the Sun). At the same time Juli is off on vacation, dejected, having been let down as she saw Daniel go off with this other woman, and since she is a free spirit, unlike Daniel, heads off to wherever fate takes her. Fate lands Daniel, in a borrowed car, at her feet, and the trek to Istanbul has begun, as Juli sees this as a chance to get Daniel to fall in love with her. I found this movie more of a drama with comedic and romantic elements and not just a basic "Hollywood" rom-com. The dialogue flowed naturally, as did the development of Daniel. How he turns from a pacifist who would no more rock any boat, to someone who ends up suggesting stealing a car, lying to get into another country, and even ends up in jail. There is a little slapstick that goes on in a few of the scenes, but it was done intelligently. Overall, a nice and entertaining movie.
I came across Faith Akin's movie "Im Juli" /("In July") by pure chance and the fact that it had Moritz Bleibtreu (from "Run Lola Run" fame) in it made it appeal to me since I liked Moritz in previous other movies. The movie tells the story of a young teacher (Moritz) who thinks he had met the love of his life in a Turkish girl and follows her to Istanbul/Turkey. At the same time his real true love, Juli (Christiane Paul) travels with him, saves him and silently tries to win his heart over.In the end everything finds it's solution and climax beneath the Posporus bridge in Istanbul - the meeting point. The movie is well paced, doesn't have big special effects, but tells a wonderful story. Faith Akin's latest movie "Gegen die Wand" /("Head on") made him internationally aware to critics and a bigger audience.Unfortunately unlike with "Gegen die Wand", there is no international release for "Im Juli" - so the movie only has German language and subtitles...
Please, can someone at IMDb be more careful about which review gets displayed on the main details page of each film? It is simply not right to have to read someone's wrongfully deprecating comments just under the main details. Especially if the rest of the reviews are so obviously positive. Every film should be displayed with a comment that represents the opinion of the majority of viewers. If IMDb simply selects a random comment, a great film (like this) can be overlooked by someone who doesn't have the time to read the entire literature posted under "comments". As to this film, light, good-natured, new, original, funny, even if at times it finds refuge in the banal. Otherwise, a 9 out of ten.
