A Masterpiece!
I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
True to its essence, the characters remain on the same line and manage to entertain the viewer, each highlighting their own distinctive qualities or touches.
It is deep movie. I was emotional while watching this. I saw part of myself, my story on the screen. However it didn't want to be deep and serious movie. Instead the directors and writers wanted it to be light and cute. It's family friendly. I'll surely watch it again. It was emotional roller coaster for me. But who knows, it may be just me. For other person it might seem cheap wanna be flick. But that doesn't matter. It's my review and my feeling. And it's true that it seemed deep and touched me inside. Also it stars three or four of my wanna see actors. Little Dakota girl, late Brittany Murphy and a guy from Clueless. It's cute movie. And I'll cherish it.
This is actually a hard review to write, because of what happened to Brittney Murphy. I saw "Uptown Girls" years ago, on cable, and thought this is a movie that cries for a remake, because the story had possibilities, but the star (Murphy) and the ending ruined it (I did like it better than "Little Black Book" (which I also forgot about, but remember really disliking)). But, I read a lot of positive reviews of "Uptown Girls" (and I heard about the sad story involving Ms. Murphy), so I thought it was worth checking out again, so I watched the final half hour of this film again. Sad to say, I was right the first time and when it seemed like Ms. Murphy (Molly) was basically sick and on drugs throughout the film (the thick black mascara is something you think of seeing on football players, not on a beautiful woman ( also the much older Heather Locklear was better looking in the film)). Spoilers ahead: But beyond that, it seems like there was an abrupt ending to the movie, from Coney Island, to the interview, to the funeral, to the play where Ray (Dakota Fanning (the best one in the movie)), Neal, and the other girls put on the ballet for "Molly" (Speaking of "Molly" that song was brutal). Does it mean that I am right about her, being sick and there was drug use during "Uptown Girls", and it affected the film? No, but when you hear that she died of pneumonia, anemia and drug intoxication (and her husband died the same way),and the fact that her "A" Film career ended so quickly, it makes you think there is something to it. Which is why it is hard to write a review that is both honest ( Except for Dakota Fanning, I did not like the movie), but not trashing Britney Murphy in the process (because she was not a bad person). Basically another very sad Hollywood Story, and since her body of work was not that great (say unlike Marilyn Monroe or Jean Harlow), I cannot watch another Brittney Murphy movie again.
This movie seems to be geared towards children, but it is NOT a kid's movie. I enjoyed Brittany Murphy's portrayal of a truly clueless heiress who's lived on the memory and bank account of her deceased parents. What strikes me as realistic, is that I've know people like this. Who've covered their real pain with spending a majority of their adult lives in a muddled haze in order not to confront the pain of the truth.Once Molly has to face her own demons thru the eyes of Dakota's character, you see that she will be a strong fulfilled person. And that is a nice way to NOT get preachy.Boaz Yakin's direction is amazing, because he skates the typical rom-com with real emotions. Similar to the way he's done "Remember The Titans", he gives it a touch of truth, even though we are clearly in a fairy tale story. I am impressed with his ability to not get TOO corny, but still play it up for emotions. Obviously, you will get the staples of physical humor (break a heel and trip, closet contents falling on head), but these pratfalls are few between that you can forgive it.Some of the plot lines are frustrating though. The Heather Locklear character has only one speed and you feel that her "change" may be too...pat. But for the most part, you either go with the flow or get angry that you're being manipulated. I went with the flow.In hindsight, and knowing the fate of Brittany Murphy, it's sad to see what could've been. She is a stronger actress than people seem to give her credit for. I think had she grown up into her late 30's or 40's, I almost feel she may have done more important work. In that sense, this movie feels haunted because of this knowledge. And watching it now...there is more gravity to her character.
I saw this movie because I was quite bored and because I liked Dakota Fanning. I wasn't sure if I would like it but it was actually a heart warming movie. Brittany Murphy did a fabulous job as the fun babysitter. However, Dakota Fanning was wonderful, she was about eight years old when she did this movie and she performed perfectly. It might not be that original but it was alright. It's obviously not the best movie ever but it is a good movie to rent. The plot was easy to understand and straight to the point. It's a sweet story for children and I recommend it if you are going to watch a family movie. Overall, not that bad.
