This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.

The film may be flawed, but its message is not.

This movie was a staple of late-night cable TV in the early 90s, which is how I first caught it at the age of twelve or so. I recently re-watched The Stuff for the first time since then, and was surprised at how much I remembered. This movie is sticky and sweet, I guess. It sticks to your brain, somehow. Now, this is the kind of movie that's perfect for switching off your brain and just kind of going along with it, with a foolish grin on your face. Literally nothing about the story makes a lick of sense. The movie defies analysis, except, it's rather neat that you can spot the influences. Now that I'm older and more versed in horror and sci-fi stories, I am almost surprised to be reminded of Quatermass II in particular. There's also Invasion of the Body-snatchers in there, I guess. It even reminded me a little of a Doctor Who story from the early 70s about green slime bubbling out of the earth that turns people into animalistic zombie-like creatures. In that story, you yell at the screen, "you idiot, don't touch number 2 output pipe!" But at least none of the characters decide the goop might be good to eat! These other sources are known for their social commentary, and, i believe, so are Larry Cohen's films generally. However, I think this one is too confused and determined to have a good time to properly convey a social message. It can't seem to decide what it wants to say. Is it an anti-drug piece? I guess that almost works. The militia colonel or whatever is just too broad a characature to make this come off seriously as an anti-communist/cold war polemic, and, I guess, thank Satan for that. But, screw it. Let's not analyse this thing. I'm serious: if you think about it too much, this movie might just make you kind of annoyed at its dozens of holes in logic. So let's just eat dessert and have fun. This thing is a laugh a minute and at times you might even catch yourself feeling a little bit creepy. But that latter is never for long. That said, my favourite moment is probably the dissolution of Chocolate Chip Charlie. That's a great Horror Film "Oh No" Moment (tm). Speaking of which, on re-watch, I was disappointed that Chocolate Chip Charlie wasn't in the movie more. I love Chocolate Chip Charlie. This is the kind of movie, in fact, that feels like it was written by a giggling twelve-year-old, or maybe by Roald Dahl while really drunk, and that's pretty cool, if you like that sort of thing. I do, on occasion, particularly when it's an 80s film. Just look at that premise.N.B: Eat pizza or popcorn while watching this; not ice cream, yoghurt or shaving cream.

The Stuff is strictly tongue in cheek. Everything in this movie was done for a purpose. From it's bad acting, to the playful script and many cuckoo characters...all of this works to the film's advantage. The Stuff is another great movie for the Halloween season. Another thing...The Stuff looks so damn deliciously good and creamy. I would eat it in a heartbeat. F**k being invaded by it's evilness! It looks so damn tasty!

Two people find white stuff oozing from the ground in a pile of snow, one of the men tastes it and thinks it is the best thing he has ever tasted. When they bring it back more and more people start to like it so the ooze is marketed as a desert called THE STUFF. When a little boy sees the desert move by it's self in his fridge he decides that the desert is evil. He continues his assumption as his family start acting really weird and buy lots and lots of the stuff and try to force the boy to try some. When he escapes from his family he meets up with a man who also thinks something is up about this desert. The two join together also with a woman and also an African/American man. The group of people persuade the army and they must battle a horde of people who have been overtaken by the evil desert. This film starred: Michael Moriarty, Scott Bloom & Andrea Marcovicci.THE STUFF was released in 1985 and is among other films in it's genre like Body Melt, Street Trash and The Blob. Out of them three films I have only seen The Blob and In have to admit to liking The Blob. However this film is a disgrace the acting is terrible, the plot is even worse and there is nothing at all to like about this film. I really don't recommend this film as it is a dreary mess.*/***** Very poor.

The Stuff was a nostalgic film for me. I remember seeing it at 8 or 9 on a Saturday afternoon television show which aired weekly horror films (Chicago natives might know to which show I refer) and had been eager to view it again as an adult; however 15 years later, nostalgia simply wasn't enough.Larry Cohen's The Stuff is a horror movie with a unique idea, a satire on America's consumption culture leading to the marketing of a deadly, addictive, frozen treat. However, the best ideas can fail if not executed properly. The acting in this film leaves much to be desired. While I did not go into this movie expecting acting on par with Oscar-caliber films, I was still quite disappointed in its mediocre acting and poor dialogue. The special effects in The Stuff are relatively good considering the b-movie quality and budget of this film. However, the music and sound effects seemed very disjointed and out of place; usually conflicting with the events occurring in the movie.Overall, The Stuff presents an interesting idea that had potential to be a good sci-fi/horror film, but The Stuff simply fails as a good movie; however, it's not unwatchable, and might prove to be a "fun" distraction if you're looking for a campy, mediocre movie with which to kill an evening.3.5 out of 10.
