The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.

Ok... Let's be honest. It cannot be the best movie but is quite enjoyable. The movie has the potential to develop a great plot for future movies

52 Pick Up finds Roy Scheider a successful industrialist with a gift that keeps on giving copyright finds himself the victim of a blackmailing trio of John Glover, Clarence Williams, III, and Robert Trebor. They are involved in a porn palace and one of the young models has been seeing Scheider on the side. This all is complicated by the fact that Scheider's wife Ann-Margret is looking toward a political career.Scheider fancies himself a tough guy and blows them off. But these guys blow back mean and nasty even murdering the mistress Vanity and harassing Ann-Margret. They video Vanity's death for Scheider and show they have a neat frame for Scheider to fit in.Vanity by the way gives a frightening performance during said video of a person knowing she's about to die at the hands of lowlifes. And this trio is about as low as you can go. Glover is truly psychotic, Williams is a stone cold killer and Trebor is a feckless idiot.Scheider plays them off against each other, a little vengeance, a little justice mix in nicely. Even in the end with the last one standing you figure out just how he will deal and you look forward with anticipation as to what will come.Ann-Margret's character is clearly based on recent Vice Presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro and the foibles of her husband John Zaccaro which publicity about did her no good. Then again I don't think Ferraro had to deal with the trio of baddies that this film offers.52 Pick Up is a nice suspenseful action flick. I'm sure you'll figure out what happens to the last baddie and look forward.

Roy Scheider is solid as a rock as self-made millionaire Harry Mitchell, one of those kinds of guys who seemingly has it all. But his indiscretion with young stripper Cini (Kelly Preston) has led to unexpected complications: a trio of bad guys with knowledge of his actions attempt to blackmail him. Harry decides to basically tell them to do something obscene to themselves and confesses all to his wife Barbara (Ann-Margret); he loves her enough to not want to damage her budding political career. So the three lowlifes up their game: they abduct Cini, torture and murder her (in a memorably disturbing sequence), and set things up to make it look like Harry killed her. So now Harry *definitely* can't go to the police. He then stubbornly sets about trying to solve the problem on his own.Co-written for the screen by Elmore Leonard, from his own novel, this is compelling every step of the way, with efficient direction by the legendary John Frankenheimer. Granted, it may not be to all tastes: some people may find it overly sleazy, or feel that the leading characters are just a little too cold, but it's fundamentally a good and twist laden story that is well told by Frankenheimer and a talented bunch of collaborators, including cinematographers Jost Vacano ("RoboCop" '87) and Stephen Ramsey. The lurid descent into the slimy universe inhabited by the villains gives the tale an effective edge; for one thing, ringleader Alan Raimy (John Glover) runs a porno movie theatre. At the very least, the villains are set up as being scummy enough that you just can't wait to see them get their comeuppance.Glover is simply perfect in his part, receiving strong support from a genuinely spooky Clarence Williams III as pimp Bobby Shy and an amusing Robert Trebor as pathetic worm Leo Franks, operator of a nude model salon. Also among the cast are the super sexy Vanity as nude model Doreen (she and Preston do show off a great deal of skin along the way), Lonny Chapman as Harry's lawyer Jim O'Boyle, and Doug McClure as politician Mark Arveson. Porn aficionados will note the appearances of stars like Ron Jeremy, Sharon Mitchell, and Jamie Gillis during the party scene. The film does admittedly go on a little long but it keeps its grip thanks to the acting and Leonards' enjoyably sordid tale.Eight out of 10.

Elmore Leonard died recently, and so I decided to watch this movie based on one of his novels. John Frankenheimer directed Roy Scheider and Ann-Margret in "52 Pick-Up", about an industrialist whose affair leads to severe consequences. It seems that the movie is simultaneously testing your willingness to watch a lot of nasty stuff and making you feel as if you want to watch ever more of it. Gross as a lot of it is, Frankenheimer's slick direction keeps even the most unpleasant scene relevant to the story. Mired as the characters are in a world of sleaze, there's sort of no nice way for the story to progress."52 Pick-Up" continues the string of serious movies in which Ann-Margret started appearing in the '70s ("Carnal Knowledge", "Tommy", "Magic"). No doubt she realized that it was time to move away from her sex kitten image. A really different role for her was the 2006 suspense thriller "Memory". Above all, "52 Pick-Up" is a movie that I recommend. It's definitely not going to be for everyone, but I liked it.

You can't help love this movie. It's a tight thriller about a group of ex cons, some sleazy and repulsive sorts, involved in the pornographic industry of underground sleaze. They too have got this rich businessman right where they've want him. They want him to pay, a lot. At first Harry Mitchell (Roy Schneider) who runs his construction company, doesn't play ball which is a bad mistake, especially on his part, where his now dead hottie, 20 years his minor is killed, where they had taped evidence of his infidelity. Without really going into anymore of this story, 52 Pick Up is a compact thriller with some nice little bits of sleaze amidst. There are great performances, especially from our sleazoids. One being Clarence Williams, the third, as Bobby Shy, who again doesn't disappoint. He's a boyfriend of one of the black dancers, the sizzling Vanity, who looks so hot in lingerie with her assets. You want to take poloroids of her like this, all day. He's part of the blackmailing trio. Like getting a taste of Harry's work, we get to see quite a slice of how our sleazesters live like at parties, boobies here, boobies there. The villains are so well created, the actors giving them justice, John Glover in particular, the head of this set up. You gotta admire Harry's will and defiance, where his wife (Ann Margaret in this kind of movie?) a successful campaigner is running for a political seat, so Harry's not the only one with a lot to lose. And one wonders, which works in the thriller element of the story, if the dead ex girlfriend (Preston) was also involved in the set up which we'll never know. I love the small scenes and locations of sleaze, like in the dirty strips clubs, other dives, porno theatres, one if you can believe is operated by Glover. Too in the sleaze department we have some weird happenings, like Glover making his own pornographic movie, filming two female hotties getting in on, before they're rudely interrupted by a not so happy and betrayed Bobby Shy. Each scene works in a tight and constant chain as the next. Every scene in the movie is necessary, and never bores. There's hardly a scene in this 87' flick I don't hate. Harry Mitchell is a stubbornly persistent guy and in his own way, he will get his own back on Glover, where the vengeful end is slick and priceless, a revenge lovers dream. Whatever your movie pleasure, 52 Pick Up, is different and a smart psychological thriller, where it's generous amount of sleazy bits, almost brings it down, but thankfully it just rises above that.
