This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
1st watched 12/25/2010 – 3 out of 10 (Dir-Steve Purcell): Lame, un-exciting straight to video mis-adventure with the Olsen twins which is supposedly about their first car trip after getting their licenses to drive. What actually happens is their car gets stolen on the way to the Olympics winter games in Utah, and their boyfriends(or at least friends who are boys) car gets it's tires blown out due to a stupid mistake of backing up in a drivethru and they have to find other ways of getting there(hence the title). They try a couple different ways of making their destination and eventually make it. Along the way they have of hints of puppy love and nonsense scenes where nothing really happens. This is typical of one of their movies but you'd think their audience would expect a little more from then now that their growing up – but I guess not! The co-stars are rejects from teeny-bopper TV shows at best, and the writing is nil to none with a little better music than we're used to hearing in their videos. I guess if you have a thing for the twins, you'll like the movie – otherwise stay away from it. This movie was definitely from a big merchandising era for the twins, but it didn't last long – hopefully their adult career will give them more to hold onto than their money.
The face of the old woman near Baker or Bishop in California's Owens' Valley tells most of the point of this story. Not all bumble through life as pleasantly as these dudes, well played morons by reasonably good actors. Some get to places they cannot drive out of and still make a life worthwhile.. picking oranges, running bakeries (Paul Schatz' in Bishop rules!), bumming at ski resorts, waiting tables, playing the piano, or..The sequence of driving, busing, flying.. the parallels to college, drifting and 'hunting' their way to figuring out roles in life.. all are quite telling. The kids did a great acting job summarizing the idiosyncrasies of today's youth, I wonder if they realize it themselves?
I am really sorry guys, I really didn't like this movie. Like all the other Mary Kate and Ashley movies, though I do like two or three of them, Getting There suffers from being too predictable, and somehow it didn't feel like a movie. The camera-work was terrible, it was too fast and even blurry at times, the first two minutes especially. The script was clichéd and overly-simplistic, and it was also rather unfunny, apart from one or two bright spots with Toast. The story was too predictable, and has been done better many times. The pace of this film was also uneven. The earlier scenes felt rushed and the later scenes dragged so badly. The soundtrack was okay, whilst I liked the one at the beginning, some of the other song choices were poor. I didn't like the acting very much either, the boys especially were annoying, and the film felt as though the director, who didn't do his job very well says I, was just portraying a routine, every-day life scenario, which I have already said, has been done before better. The two redeeming qualities were some great-looking scenery, and the spirited performances of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. Other than that, Getting There failed as a good film, and came across as predictable and contrived above all else. If you want an above average feel good film, watch Clueless instead. 2/10 Bethany Cox.
This has got to be one of the worst movies ever made. I don't see how it could possibly be carrying a 2.7 average rating at the present. I only gave it a 1 because the scoring system doesn't allow a 0.SPOILER ALERT - How can they be so unconcerned when their car is stolen. It was like, "Oh Well, the insurance will cover it." and they are back on the road the next day.And is there anything more disgusting than seeing that Toast character constantly chewing food with his mouth open. I mean, people, pay to see the movie, and they have to see that repeatedly. The joke about him being obsessed with eating got old by about 10 minutes into the film. Conclusion: Spend you time watching something else, like paint drying.
