Best movie of this year hands down!
I love this movie so much
Don't listen to the Hype. It's awful
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
As good as the DVD box says it is, v1.00 First viewing I found this very okay, something that I had not been expecting as the DVD box says that it is really good. When a box says that expect the opposite? SF for kids, but a lot of care has gone into getting the detail right. The quality of acting reflects that approach, too. The story hangs together and flows. A story at the level of 'Super 8'.So, 'the spiders react to sound', what type of spiders and how? The SF calls for an uncritical approach, but that is not uncommon and here it does not get in the way for me.This is the sort of story that has me looking to IMDb Filming Locations. Spectacular Northern Rockies. British Columbia, Canada and Seattle, USA.The dynamics between the two kids, brother and sister, as a highlight. They get along. Occasionally there is conflict, big brother likes to be on top. Mostly they fit together well, they are principals in what is at times an action story and they make a good team. Their rather different qualities support each other to allow things to get done. That aspect might have been deliberately crafted in as a kiddie morality tale. Thankfully, Mimzy is better than a simple 'good and proper' story.
Noah and Emma find assorted toy-type items (including a toy rabbit which Emma names Mimzy and which seems to talk to her) which behave unusually and seem to make the two children much cleverer, piqueing the interest of Noah's science teacher. However, the Government gets wind of these oddnesses, and, well, you know how paranoid Government departments can get.In many respects this is quite a good family movie, with decent performances (especially from the two kids - the girl has an annoyingly squeaky voice but acts well) and a tolerable payoff. It is, however, as dumb as a plate full of chicken wings. Especially irritating is the fact that people question the children and, as soon as the children start explaining this stuff which everyone has witnessed, they are ignored, disbelieved, or both. And as for the paranoid Government department, well, 'nuff said. It's not bad if you don't feel very critical.
... we have this sweet, magical and engrossing little treat, written by Toby Emmerich of all people, that (and I have emphasized this factor in other reviews) "connects" with the audience (via the children) almost immediately; and then takes the audience on a pleasant little ride into the internal Fantasyland that each of us carries within us. Other reviewers have emphasized that this is a "family" film but of late I have come to regard that label with suspicion. A McLuhan scholar might well argue that in the world of simultaneous multi-band electronic media, children are no longer children as such, they have evolved into "tiny people" and it is increasingly more difficult to under-estimate them. Similarly, this film should not be under-estimated. It works, beginning to end, it entertains, it intrigues. It also reacquaints US viewers with Joely Richardson, a vastly underexposed actress on this side of the pond. Would see it more than once. And I have.
You don't have to worry about violence or bad language on this flick. Kids will enjoy it, at least up until age 12. Maybe older. It has many components: The brother and sister who seem to have a lot of freedom (where are the parents in these movies?), there is some science fiction, fantasy, imagination, special effects and action. Oh and we have the evil FBI (if you are of the conservative persuasion, you will notice a little knock at The Patriot Act in this film, but it is slight and easy to ignore). There is a time travel element here that although a key point of the story, if you think about it very much, it leaves you kind of flat. But the child actors are awesome and the bulk of the journey is fun. We had fun watching the expressions on our kids faces while they watched. Pop some popcorn and enjoy. If you have a projector for backyard movies---this is top notch for the kid crowd.
