The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

The Stoned Age (1994)*** (out of 4) Buddies Hubbs (Bradford Tatum) and Joe (Michael Kopelow) are out driving around looking for some fun chicks when they hear about two of them. They decide to pay them a visit even though they belong to a crazed criminal and soon they're trying to score with them as well as get some alcohol. THE STONED AGE is a pretty lame brain movie but that really doesn't matter because it's a lot of fun. The cast is excellent, the director keeps things moving at a very good place, there's sex and nudity, a lot of drinking, mean pranks and a great 70's rock soundtrack. Many people have called this a dumbed down version of DAZED AND CONFUSED, which actually isn't fair because both films set out to do something completely different so it's not really fair to compare the two. With that said, this film here has so many hilarious moments that it's impossible to not really enjoy it. I think a lot of the charm comes from Tatum and the rather silly Joe as they get into one bad situation after another. Or, should I say that Joe gets into one bad situation after another and you just want to see the guy catch a break. The little journey here certainly isn't anything ground-breaking but it's a lot of fun and we get some great laughs along the way. The stuff dealing with Blue Oyster Cult is very funny and the chemistry between the two stars is very memorable and it's too bad more movies weren't made with them. I think ones entertainment level will probably be even higher if you can relate to these two guys. The driving around, looking for girls, smoking weed and just getting into trouble. The film is very innocent and oh so much fun.

To be fair, I can't really remember the finer points of D&C (no, not for the reason you think), but I liked The Stoned Age quite a bit better. The main characters are hilarious and grow on you over time, the pacing is just right (enough crazy stuff happens to keep things interesting without there being an explosion every two minutes) and the ambiance sets the perfect tone (music, clothes and set are spot on).The story centers around Joe and Hubbs, two long-haired metal heads who, above all else, want to get drunk, stoned and laid. Their search for rad chicks eventually leads them to the home of Lanie and Jill (actually, Jill's dad's house) and then things get even more awesome from there.Although they are kind of Troglodytic misogynists of sorts (Hubbs more than Joe), they're extremely cute and lovable troglodytic misogynists. Or maybe that's just me. I can't seem to get enough of 70s stoners looking for adventures. Renee Allman is great as the smoking hot Lanie. Usually the "bad" chicks in these movies are completely unbearable to watch, but Lanie is absolutely someone I would want to hang out with. Jill, the demure brunette in their friendship, is probably the weakest of the four main characters, but actress China Kanter (daughter of Jefferson Airplane members Jeff Kanter and Grace Slick) does a fine job with what she has.Joe and Hubbs do have a kind of Beavis and Butthead dynamic to them, which of course only adds to their appeal. After getting KO'ed by a stage light at a Blue Oyster Cult concert a few weeks prior, Joe has been having strange visions and experiencing the nagging feeling that there might be something more to life than drinking, smoking pot and banging chicks. The hellacious adventures he has during the course of "The Stoned Age" seem to prove him right.Maybe I just wanted to like this movie. I've wanted to see it since I was about ten years old (I'm 27 now) and it first hit the stands at my local Hollywood Video (which no longer exists, of course). Wandering through the aisles in search of something my parents would let me watch, I invariably came across movies that were clearly not appropriate for the under 12 set, yet still fascinated and confounded me with their provocative artwork and intriguing synopses. The Stoned Age, with Joe, Hubbs and Lanie mooning on the hood of the Blue Torpedo, backed by a beautiful tie-dye sunset, looked exciting and forbidden to me. Who were these cool teens, and what did they do all day? Why did the guys have such long hair, and how could I make myself look exactly like that girl? Ah, such are the strange thoughts of an awkward ten year old in the mid-nineties. Though I never got to see The Stoned Age while it was at Hollywood Video, I did catch it on Netflix a couple weeks ago, and felt that warm fuzzy sensation you get when your childhood dreams come true. Ah, the power of cinema. Radical.

I had just graduated high school when this movie came out. I have watched this movie on VHS, DVD, and now streaming on Netflix. This movie doesn't rely on great special effects, or big name stars. This is your classic B flick with a crap load of cameo's from all kids of crazy people. This movie is perfect for those 2am can't sleep nights, or right after sharing a six pack with a buddy. The Sound track is great for classic rockers, the comedy is slap stick and corny as hell, and the hair is everywhere. So grab yourself a quart of peppermint schnapps, a 12 pack of tall cans, an ounce of skank weed, and a couple beef and potato burritos and enjoy yourself. Oh and take a shooter of 151 before ya watch. If you find you enjoy this movie; I recommend other great B flicks such as:Up the Creak/ Up the Academy/ Meatballs/ Better of Dead/ Ski Patrol

I saw this way back when it came out on VHS. Thought it was hilarious. Watched it with a buddy and as soon as it was done we hit rewind and watched the flick again.I just recently watched it again on NETFLIX watch it now and realized it had a very similar albeit racier tone to That 70's Show. From the characters and even the musical cues kept me feeling I was watching the T7S film adaptation.Anyways great b-movie with a great soundtrack.Tack was awesome.Put a little insanity on your potato and shake it maaaan.
