Sorry, this movie sucks
Please don't spend money on this.
It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
Although low-budget zombie movies are ten a penny these days and, it's fair to say, the majority of them are absolute rubbish, STATE OF EMERGENCY offers something a little different. For a start, it looks like a professional, well-made movie despite the low budget; it has great production values and it avoids being cheesy for the most part.Of course, there's a flip side to this coin, and the main detraction with the film is that it's incredibly slow. There are lots and lots of long, drawn-out sequences where the protagonist just barricades himself inside a building and waits...and waits...and waits. Some viewers might find this off-putting, although I found that the tension levels were high, which kept me watching. The acting isn't bad, and pretty good for a B-movie, and as mentioned the technical values are decent. The zombies themselves are fast-moving and ultra-aggressive, much like the ones in 28 DAYS LATER, and the scare sequences are well handled. STATE OF EMERGENCY is far from perfect, and one of the disappointments is that the ending just fizzles out instead of bangs, but in a sea of trash watching it is a nice surprise.
Acting was sub par, opening scene was slow and really set the mood for the whole movie. Slow. There was a huge lack of "zombies" if that's what you want to call them. There was not much emotion and you barely learned anything about the characters. The time frame of this movie was also ridiculous. I don't think it was even really a life or death situation for these characters as long as they stayed hidden. Maybe two weeks at most? Also it seemed the actors/actresses showed up to work, read their script and repeated them out loud and their day was done. I know this is minor but they called the soldiers in the movie marines. While they were clearly Army. That not a detail that should be overlooked.
With apocalypse movies on the rise and the media being over saturated with movies of this kind, a lot of movies have plots and tropes that get spread over all of them. Luckily this movie does NOT share that in common.I had this movie playing in the background while doing some chores until a scene really interested me. So I quickly reminded, sat down and watched the whole movie. That's when I realized that even gems can be found on netflix and not just stupid background movies. This movie takes all these apocalypse and zombie tropes and throws them away for a better, calmer, and nicer script. As I said, the movie is slower, but it goes for a more psychological and more realistic view on what people would do in a State of Emergency. I honestly extremely enjoyed this movie just for being different, but it goes beyond that. The cast is likable and while there's not a lot of talking in the beginning of the film, it makes sense and character development as well as story development is displayed very well in other ways. It's rare for the acting to dip as the characters are very well wrote and casted. This movie is good enough that I'd buy it. This movie is better then most of the crap that has made it to theaters recently. I usually don't like slower paced movies but this one keeps you interested even if it is at a slower moment. So in the end the movie is free on streaming, it's original, it's not full of tropes, and it's amazing! How can you go wrong?

The story follows Jim, a young man isolated within the red zone, as he eludes flesh eating zombies in an attempt to win back his freedom.I found this movie very hard to follow. And, yes, it IS just a zombie film, so what's to follow? But they set it up so that the exposition is very slow and doesn't keep your attention. I had a hard time trying to figure out why I should keep watching. There was very little zombie action until well into the movie. I'm still not sure where the main character lives. Sometimes it looks like a prison or hospital and other times it looks like a home. .There's no explanation how he gets up on a barn roof -- why would you go there with a ladder when the zombies could just follow you? How did the padlock open? By itself? Why doesn't he want to turn on the light when he hears noises? Why does he think the zombies understand English? Why does he run AWAY from his rifle when he needs it? Why when he finally gets the rifle, does he not load it? There are lots of little things like this that make no sense and causes one to lose interest because it's poor writing. Another example, he fires three shots, kills a zombie and suddenly the phone rings. He answers it and a stranger says "are you the guy in the barn? We heard shots and I tried every number in the book to get you." What? You called 3 seconds after the shots were fired! You had no time to look up anything. Nobody finds this weird? And the guy doesn't even know his name but somehow got his phone number! This could have been a really good film if it was better written and better directed -- especially the writing. It's very very poorly written. The acting inst bad, but the writing is horrendous. Also, the print I saw was filled with very tiny red specs throughout. Not sure if that was intentional, but it was annoying.
