Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
It is interesting even when nothing much happens, which is for most of its 3-hour running time. Read full review
Worth seeing just to witness how winsome it is.
Cyndi Lauper, Jeff Goldblum, Peter Falk and Julian Sands star in this 1988 comedy. This tells of Sylvia (Lauper), a gifted psychic from New York who meets Nick (Goldblum), another psychic and they find romance with each other. They're asked by man, Harry (Falk) to find his missing son in Ecuador only to learn they're being tricked into finding an ancient temple instead. Sands (Warlock) plays Harrison, a doctor who works with Nick and Sylvia. I grew up watching this film and always liked it. Lauper and Goldblum are good in it and have good chemistry plus James Horner's score is great as usual. I recommend this good 80's supernatural comedy.
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and The Fly play two psychics hired by Columbo to find his long lost son in a foreign country. When they get there they discover he's really hired them to help find a hidden temple in the mountains where all the psychic energy in the world comes from.....The sad thing about vibes is that it has such a wonderful concept to it. If it focused more on the characters psychic powers, rather than turning into a pseudo Indiana Jones wannabe halfway through the film, it could have been something. The actors are not to blame, the writing is terrible, and Goldblum does his best bumbling fool act he mastered in the eighties before he became Mister Frost.Lauper has screen presence, but my gosh, her voice is so grating, I was desperately seeking Susan toward the end. It's a real shame, because the first twenty minutes is really entertaining and quite funny when we meet the psychics and their own brand of kooky powers. But then the film tries too hard to be clever, and it loses any momentum that it had to begin with.If your an eighties aficionado, it's firmly stuck in the eighties, with the music and clothing, but that's all there is to recommend.
I'm really glad to see other reviewers talking about how much fun this film is. It's so good, sweet, and funny that I can't believe it's so poorly rated in some places. Roger Ebert must have eaten something bad before watching it, because 1 star is just ridiculous. And Rotten Tomatoes, that usually picks up on the more quirky films gives it just 6%? Really? Dark Star, which I also love, but is much more reliant on sheer quirkiness and offers much lower quality plotting and acting, gets 79%? Vibes is a film that, like Dark Star, should really be appreciated by anyone who loves film and appreciates smart-but-silly humor. It has higher quality production values and much better acting than Dark Star, but is lighter and less dark.Others have talked about the great comedic timing and lots else to enjoy in this film, so I'll skip all that, and just give a word of advice.... Don't even look at the trailer. It is absolutely abysmal. I'm grateful I never saw the trailer or I'd probably never have seen the film. Really. It's that bad. And given the huge disparity between critics' ratings and the great joy this film brings, just skip bad reviews as well. That person didn't get it, and it's their loss. Just relax and enjoy this great little hidden gem.
It's all about the vibes. An endearingly quirky late 80s adventure comedy with a bit of romance on the side, sees Jeff Goldblum and Cindy Lauper as psychics hired on to head to Ecuador to find a treasure of a lost Aztec civilisation. The support cast is remotely good with the likes of Julian Sands, Peter Falk, Michael Lerner and a very minor part for a pre-stardom Steve Buscemi. The chemistry between stars Goldblum and Lauper is delightful, as Goldblum's dry gawkiness matches well with Lauper animated perkiness. The indistinct plot is quite slow going, often silly and never does it feel all that complete with little going on, but it's the snappy script with its one-liners and performances (especially Falk's comical turn) that makes it quite agreeable along with the exotic South American locations. Some moments bestow atmospheric touches and danger, namely the sequences around the ruins when something mystical eventuates, but these moments are probably weakest inclusions."What's your problem? Besides from your face."
