The Thaw

Boring
Am i the only one who thinks........Average?
The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
Some Movies Deliver Their Messages, or Agenda in a Subtle Subtext of Symbolism or Analogous Connections. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) for Example is Often Stated as a McCarthy Era Reflection. However, Others State Their Intention in an Outright, Often Overwhelming Oratory of Stated Purpose and There is No Doubt Where "The Thing" Stands and it is On With the Show. This Horror Show is of the Latter. It is Quite a Horror Show and it Has Its Moments of Terror and Gore. But, This is Not Done For Laughs or Prurient Intent for the Teenage Crowd. It has a Cold Atmosphere of Isolation and Intrigues to a Point. Yes, There is a Bit of Questionable Behavior of the Grad Students, but the Film Makes Up for it in Outright Horrific Displays of Bug Infestation with Some Good SFX and Makeup. The Cast Waivers from Overacting to Believable. Overall, This is a Thoughtful Entertainment and it is Certainly Topical. This Might Seem Derivative, and it is, but is Handled Professionally and it is a Pertinent Picture in the Eco-Horror Genre. Above Average for This Type of Low Budget Message Movie.
The Thaw did have potential; the plot was original, the Canadian scenery was a great filming location and my favorite actor (William B. Davis, A.K.A. The Cigarette Smoking Man from The X-Files) was briefly in it. The soundtrack was pretty good, too.The problem is, this movie is very one-sided, leaning towards extreme environmentalism. I can tolerate it being briefly mentioned (although I am very much against environmentalism controlling society as it has been lately). I've seen a few movies where the topic comes up and it doesn't bug me at all. But when it seems like every second word has to do with pro-environmentalism and the main teenage characters seem to be all hippies, it gets very annoying. If I were a member of The Green Party of Canada or an Al Gore fan I might have loved it, but to each their own. It's really too bad, because there were some amazing actors/actresses in The Thaw that I think did an excellent job regardless of the hippie brainwashing. And I loved the British Columbia scenery (although I've personally never been there).
For me,they don't come much better than this. I particularly like Science- based and\or Sci-Fi Movies and the more contemporary the better.Like most enthusiasts of this genre, for me a good Science Movie has to have a believable premise - and, with perhaps a small stretch of the Imagination - this one fits the bill. Plenty of "scary-jumpy" moments, small twists and all sorts of things going on prevent us from getting bored The script Is exceptional and my only complaint Is that two or three of the actors - mentioning no names - just weren't right for the part,or - to put It another way - couldn't act their way out of a paper bag! Well worth seeing twice.
This movie has fallen into the same pitfall so many other potentially good horror movies have fallen into. A lack of characters you could careless about. Its hard to care about the plot nor the message being sent if all you want to do it get to the end of the movie asap.Watching idiots making brainless selfish choices maybe realistic but its not what I go to watch for horror movie entertainment. If you want realism you already have it, why pay to see this crap. Its sad to see talent like Val being wasted on this trash, thank god for digital movies for now we can fast forward and skip and whatever else. Real waste of effort making the movie, real waste of time watching it. Dawg gone awful! Although the bugs eating the polar bear was good for a giggle.
