Best movie ever!

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.

Visionary French New Wave director Jean Rollin brought true artistic power to what is superficially a disturbing horror film. However, as the film progresses, it soon becomes evident there are significant themes being explored by Rollin under the guise of terror. Collaboration, retribution, and passion are sensitively observed in this film and it's certainly much more of an existentially realistic cinema journey than the simple title would lead one to believe. At times the intensity of the horror is so overwhelming it nearly becomes unendurable. However, Rollin never allows this to go so far that obscures what he is trying to say with his film. Ultimately, the motion picture works on two important levels. One is as a creative and ingenious horror film that pushes the very limits of the genre. The second is as one of the most significant cinematic statements regarding Post-WWII France and the way French society tried to reconcile the actions of citizens during the war with the present. It is that clash between past and present that explodes across the screen in what is the strongest expression of this great director's philosophy.

In World War II, in a small village in France vanquished by the German army, a local woman has a love affair with one soldier and they have a daughter, Helena. One day, the German soldiers are ambushed and killed by the French Resistance and their bodies are thrown into a lake.Ten years later, the soldiers become an army of undead attacking the locals. The Mayor, who was part of the resistance, organizes a posse with a flamethrower, to destroy the living dead, and uses the girl Helena to help them."Le Lac des Morts Vivants" is another hilarious low-budget horror-trash by Eurocine from the 70's and 80's recently released in Brazil on DVD with attractive cover. Everything is absurd in this film, from the story and screenplay to the direction, acting, make-up and cinematography (the exception are the underwater scenes); but controversially I have enjoyed and had lots of fun watching this trash. Although not responsible for the direction, the touch of Jesus Franco is visible. My vote is four.Title (Brazil): "O Lago dos Zumbis" ("The Zombie's Lake")

After the French Resistance during the second World War, French soldiers took care of the Nazi threat. Instead of disposing of them properly, they dumped the Nazi soldiers into the lake near a small town in rural France. Now, the Nazis are rising from their watery grave to slowly attack the visiting basketball team. . . which is made up of a bunch of naked young French girls.Jean Rollin has brought us several good pieces of French cinema, like 'Fascination,' 'Living Dead Girl,' etc. 'Zombie Lake,' however, is not one of his better pieces. There really is only one reason to see this picture. . . if you have a strong attraction to hot young French women. And, let's face it. . . who doesn't? Everything about this film is sensual, like a lot of Rollin's work. Even the zombie attacks have a sensual feel to them. Beyond that one positive, there really isn't much else. The film is really quite dull, the acting is subpar, and the writing left a lot to be desired. Rollin's direction was apt, but there was more visible equipment than in 'Plan 9 from Outer Space.' When it comes down to it. . . there are plenty of other better films out there. If you're desperate for a good Underwater Nazi Zombie flick, check out 'Shock Waves' (1977).Final verdict: 3/10.-AP3-

***SPOILERS!*** - Jean Rollin's "Le Lac Des Morts Vivants" aka. "Zombie Lake" must be arguably THE most ridiculous Zombie flick ever (I haven't seen Jess Franco's "Oasis Of The Zombies", which is said to be about equal, so far), which is quite something regarding all the trashy Romero and Fulci wannabes and the tons of rip-offs out there. Generally speaking, I enjoy director Rollin's films every now and then and I furthermore consider myself a fan of the super-prolific exploitation icon Jess Franco who co-wrote the film. This "Zombie Lake" however, is ONLY watchable for its value as one of the crappiest things ever brought to screen. The film's incomparable awfulness, however, makes it quite fun to watch for anybody who can enjoy awful cinema. In World War 2, the local resistance of a small French village killed a bunch of Nazi soldiers and (very smartly) threw their corpses into a lake that had been known as an obscure place of black magic since ancient times. Years later, the dead Germans awake all of a sudden and come out of the lake to drink the blood of teenage girls, who come to the lake for naked swimming (in spite of signs with Skulls and Bones that say "No Swimming!"). The Nazi-Zombies must be the most ridiculously looking living dead ever - They look quite the same as they did before they were killed, only that the makeup 'artist' here painted their faces green. In the end the Zombies are defeated when a 10-year-old girl lures them into a trap with a bucket of fresh blood (it is, of course, not explained where they took the blood from). Also, it is not quite clear at what time the film is supposed to take place - technically it can't play any later than in the 50s, as the daughter of one of the German soldiers is still a little girl of 10 years at most. Then again, the teenage girls wear hot-pants and miniskirts, which wasn't too popular in the 50s. When they wear anything, that is, since basically every female character in the film has a strong tendency to non-stop exhibitionism. Much in Rollin/Franco tradition, most girls are naked for about 90 per cent of their screen time, occasionally I had my doubts that they were all legally entitled to this, as some of them looked a bit too young. The performances are entirely god-awful, and exploitation veterans Howard Vernon and Antonio Mayans are no exception to that. The story is ridiculous from the first minute to the last, and the dialogue is among the stupidest I ever heard. Even the gore-effects are crappy. Still, this is recommendable to fans of bad cinema and watchable for people with a sense of humor for its unintentional fun-factor. But be aware that, while the sleaze and immense crap-factor might amuse at times, the film gets extremely boring at times. The use of the 'Fast Forward' button does not go in hand with a guilty conscience here.
