Fresh and Exciting
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
Mark McQueen superb direction of screenwriter Bart Ruspoli's brilliant script results in an apocalyptic vision of uncompromising horror. This is a stunning concept based upon the idea that somehow the dead have come back to life and an apocalypse of the undead has devastated civilization. With this unique foundation, McQueen builds a masterpiece of vast vistas of a city of horror, painted with imagery of bleak beauty so haunting it's unforgettable. This is the end of the world at its most powerful. Superb performances from an outstanding cast bring to life characters of touching depth and overwhelming humanity. Craig Fairbrass and Danny Dyer are particularly effective as men fighting for their lives as they try to protect those in their care. A magnificent film of unrelenting terror and supreme suspense, this is much more than simply one more zombie movie.
When an experimental drug turns the trial recipients into blood-crazed zombies and manage to overrun London, a small band of survivors must found out why one of their own who was subjected as well never turned and what it could mean to stop the epidemic.Overall this one was a fairly decent British zombie effort which isn't all that bad overall and does have some good stuff going for it. Among the best elements featured here is that the pace of the film gives this one some nice action scenes as it manages to move along with the attacks fairly nicely in that regard from scenes of the massive swarm overrunning their victims to single zombies against the group which makes it that much more enjoyable. The beginning here when the deformity gets loose in the facility gets this one going nicely as well as the resulting overrunning of the guards as he tries to blast through the crowds, the street battle of the swarm taking to the streets bring the victims out of their cars and attacking those stranded on the sidewalks while the most fun is had out in the woods which has a lot of great parts here. The initial attacks come from solo, one-on-one battles against the creatures throughout the autoshop which is fun with the big fighting but gets fun with the swarm appearing and generating plenty of enjoyable times here as they come running out of the woods spilling into the camp and over the vehicles while requiring the fun of the hand-to- hand brawls in order to hold them off. Likewise, the finale here is all sorts of fun with the mad road dash through the city streets filled with creatures, the big brawls at the helicopter pad and the full-on swarming that overruns the group's helicopter pad forcing a huge fight to hold them off while the others get to safety during the fights which make for a really fun time here. That also provides some nice highlights mainly in the blood-and-gore department as well as there's some pretty gruesome attacks in this one that really lets the blood flow here in the brutal attacks from the creatures and the vicious tactics to hold them down. The zombies look good enough and are given a good enough look throughout that holds up over the film's biggest issue. The one factor here that brings it down is the zombies' behavior, since not only is this one filled with rather clumsy action but also manages to follow the utterly stupid look of running zombies which move and run about as ninjas the way they bounce around walls here, making for a thoroughly dissatisfying taste. It's not enough to be completely disruptive of the movie, but it's enough to knock it down some against the positives.Rated R: Graphic Violence and Excessive Graphic Language.
After watching some inadequate horror movies over the past couple of days, this was exactly what I needed - a gory, bloody zombie flick with all the trimmings. Devil's Playground takes place in London where a pharmaceutical company announces that they have stumbled across a new wonder drug that they describe as a legal "performance enhancer" (super steroids) which actually (to the embarrassment of the drug company) turns out to be a poisonous cocktail that kicks off a zombie outbreak which quickly sweeps through the UK.We follow a group of people as they try to survive by finding an area somewhere in London that is zombie-free. Now, there's a plot twist that's pretty much a blatant ripoff of 28 Weeks Later, but I chose to look past it because the character development was adequate and the storyline bumped along at an even pace.Oh, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention the zombies. Devil's playground follows in the new tradition of showcasing athletic zombies that have the same speed and the same appetite as Mike Tyson. Yes, the zombies you know and love from the Dawn Of The Dead remake and 28 Days & Weeks Later are back to hunt people down like a pack of bloodthirsty dobermans that haven't been fed for weeks. The movie doesn't quite live up to the standards of Dawn Of The Dead and 28 Days & Weeks Later, but it's well worth the time if you're in the mood for a zombie flick and haven't filled your blood and gore quota for the month. Two thumbs up, horror fans.
30,000 test subjects in London are given a new experimental performance-enhancing drug. Suddenly they start coughing up blood, then they start biting others, who in turn quickly become zombies. The drug company's management is concerned but they fall victims to the aggressive zombies. A security agent by the name of Cole barely makes it out, bitten but with antivirals to control the disease. A dying researches tells him to find one of the test subjects, a pregnant woman, the only one not to develop the condition. Now all London is in chaos and we focus on the pregnant woman, Angela, who with a friend is trying to flee the city to meet up with her brother and from there escape in a chopper. Their exit of town turns out to be more complicated. They have to take a detour where they meet her boyfriend who just got out of prison and another guy. One the trail is Cole who meets up with all of them on a country farm. As zombies reach the area, an American couple seek refuge with them. This is an excellent violent, brutal, gory, and fast-paced zombie film. The zombies aren't just the quick runners, they are acrobats, leapers who will always avoid the straight line to get to their victims, preferring, to jump over cars and do somersaults. The first part of the film taking place in London is stylish and relentless action. The second part out in the country unfortunately focuses on the human drama with some moments of action. The American couple noticing that they are the outsiders think they won't be rescued and be left out- the helicopter only can carry 4 people, and decide to eliminate some of the others to improve their chances.Overall this is a welcome, serious zombie movie, not a comedy or teen drama movie. The quick pace makes for excellent horror action. And I found that it has some surprising moments and good ideas. It does a great job at presenting London in chaos. All the exaggerated negative reviews make no sense to me. This movie is very good and if you are a fan of good zombie movies, you won't be disappointed.
