Best movie ever!
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
Even though Glenn Quinn (the guy in the locket story) said that this was his least favorite film, I actually thought it was one of his best. Had to point it out cuz i'm a HUGE fan.On to the movie, it's not the greatest cinematic thing ever to be put on film by any means but it is well worth watching. story consists of four friends coming home from a concert who get in a car accident. While waiting for the police (which how they knew where these kids were beats me but like i said, it's not perfect) they tell each other classic scary stories to pass the time. The opening story "The Hook" of course is one that everyone knows and although it didn't really have any connectivity to the plot of the film, it just kinda gave you a heads up about what the movie was going to basically be about: urban legends that of which being the oldest. "The Honeymoon" wasn't exactly my favorite mostly because of how it ended. the guy hanging upside down on the tree with the ring scraping actually is an alternate tale from "The Hook." So i was turned off by that one. "People can lick to" was more or less just creepy especially for me because i share the girl's first name and i was about the same age when i saw the movie for the first time so usually i skipped it. "The Locket" is my favorite. Personally, that could've been made into a whole movie by its self. I really loved the ending of that story to where Quinn and Barrett's characters shared a previous life, pretty cool. The ending of the movie confused me for a while. My friends and i came up with the idea that Cliff was basically telling these stories as a way of apologizing to his friends...i don't know that's just what we came up with. Anyways, it's fun to watch, OH and keep watching a little after the credits, there's a funny ha ha moment that's quite enjoyable.
Four teenagers are coming from a concert. They're driving recklessly down a dark winding road. The car crashes and they all stumble out. While waiting for help they start telling ghost stories. The first-- called "RV"-has a newly wed couple confronted by monsters. "People Can Lick Too" has an 11 year old girl being menaced by a pedophile. "The Locket" has a young man meeting a beautiful, mute woman in an old farmhouse. Then it cuts back to the four kids. It seems help has arrived...but not what they expected. All four of the tales are based on urban legends--in part or in whole. This, unfortunately, makes it kind of a chore to watch if you know all the legends and how they end. Still this isn't a total washout. All the segments are well-directed, it has top production values and the acting is not bad across the board. It's also fun to see James Marsden, Christine Taylor and Amy Smart in small roles before they hit it big. Also Glenn Quinn (who sadly ODd a number of years ago) headlines one segment. So the movie was (for me) ridiculously predictable...but the direction, production and acting kept me interested. Worth a look. Much better than the "Urban Legends" movies. I give it a 6.
This movie dethroned Dr. Giggles as the best horror movie I've ever seen. The plot was great, the plot twists were even better and the cast was great. It's hard to believe that they compiled the most unknown people 8 years ago and they would be big names today! The plot is simple. 4 teenagers wreck their car in the middle of nowhere. They stumble on this campsite and do what everybody who is in an accident should do. Build a fire and tell scary stories.1. "The Hook." Great opener. Anyone who is in High School has heard variations of this story on Prom night. But they do it real good in this movie.2. "The Honeymoon." OK, this was not the best of the 4. It was pretty good and you get to see some boob. Emphisis on the word "some." It's just your basic creature in the woods story.3. "People Can Lick Too." This is a cautionary tale of what happens in internet chat rooms all across the country. This segment alone should be required viewing for parents whose children have access to the internet. 4. "The Locket." Now this is the best story in the whole movie. A guy on a motorcycle breaks down and goes to this mute girl's house. Very good plot twist. The main plot, "The Campfire" has the biggest and best twist in the whole movie. I won't tell what it is cause I don't want to ruin it. I was never this shocked during a movie in my life!Plot: A+ Acting: A+Writing: A+ Directing: A+ Music: A+ Overall: A+ I recommend it to anyone over 13 with the exception of "People Can Lick Too." Any parent who's child has access to the internet needs to watch this one with their child.
"Campfire Tales" is basically made up of three spooky stories that a group of friends tell after they get into a car crash in the woods after a concert. The film begins with the classic "Hook" story, and then we're introduced to the group of friends driving home from the concert. They crash their car, put out some flares, and start a fire in a little abandoned chapel, waiting for someone to arrive with help as they warm themselves by the fire. To pass the time, they decide to start telling classic horror stories, about terrorized honeymooners, a girl who falls prey to an Internet predator, and a motorist who takes refuge in a haunted house. As they tell the eerie tales, each story becomes increasingly terrifying, but the real shock that awaits them is yet to come...In my opinion, the last story they tell is probably the scariest and had some genuine, frightening effects. The first story was alright, and the motorhome sequence near the end was a little creepy. The second story built a lot of suspense, more than either of the others did, but it's unoriginal plot was it's downfall. I remember watching this movie a long time ago when I was like eight years old on HBO and the third story scared the crap out of me, although it's not scary to me now. You'll probably recognize some of the cast here, particularly Amy Smart from the opening "hook" interlude story, and Christine Taylor as one of the main actresses in the film. The twist ending was kinda interesting too, I know I didn't see that coming, I thought it was all cleverly pieced together. To sum things up, if you're looking for a horror movie that is worth the while, rent this, you should be happy. It's a great anthology of some classic urban legends, and the whole film was tied together neatly. It is much better than what one would expect. 7/10.
