Wonderful Movie
Good concept, poorly executed.
Excellent, Without a doubt!!
An Exercise In Nonsense
Taking into consideration that this movie is from 1993, it actually still proves to be a fun movie to watch even now. Sure, it is quite cheesy and campy, but that is what it actually makes it fun to watch. It was sort of strange to see Seth Green and Alfonso Ribeiro in a movie such as this. I can't claim to be fan of either of them, but from what they have previously made, then "Ticks" was quite a change of pace. The story in "Ticks" is quite simple, and has that particular 1990's vibe to it. Some experiment goes awry deep out in the forest, and the result has a horrible effect on the common tick. Exposed to the chemical, the ticks grow into monstrous size and become especially aggressive. And when a group of troubled teens have to spend the weekend camping out in the woods, little do they know what horrors they are in for."Ticks" actually has some good enough special effects, although some of the effects were pulled off better than others and with much more convincing result. But in overall, the effects function well enough and serve their purpose quite well. One of the more hilarious moments in the movie was the giant tick that emerged out of Panic, as it was much bigger than his actual body mass. So it would be physically impossible, but oh-so-campy.Don't expect to be scared or thrilled by "Ticks", as it might be labeled as a horror movie, but it is actually more of a horror comedy. I don't even think that the movie passed as being even remotely scary back in 1993.Now, the dialogue in "Ticks" was just goofy and was quite fitting into that campy and cheesy mood that the movie had going for it. Especially most of the dialogue delivered by Alfonso Ribeiro. This is a campy horror movie, so if you enjoy such movies that are not overly serious or take themselves serious, then you will find enjoyment in "Ticks" as well.
I thought this would be "so bad it's good" but it was just fine. Most movies of this type kill off all the characters one by one until just the hero remains. This one was nice enough to leave most of the cast intact. The characters: adults that don't listen to the kids, some local freaks that turn out to be a bigger problem than the ticks, a scholar, a whore, an athlete, a fool, and two virgins. The film moves along at a reasonable pace. The music mostly makes sense. The acting is passable. The premise is the familiar chemicals- accidentally-cause-creatures-to-grow-giant. There isn't any comedy. No winking. It plays the story perfectly straight. There's no nudity, almost no sex, very little swearing, and even though there's a fair bit of gore, it's mostly familiar goop and throbbing bubbles that pop open. I almost expected to find out at the end that it was made by a religious group trying to make a "wholesome" horror movie.
Yet another creature feature about people going out into the wilderness and getting slaughtered by creatures. Well actually in "Ticks" the characters are considerably less expendable compared to other horror movies.Unsurprisingly there's also a couple of human antagonists. It's unsurprising for today, actually, but considering we're talking about something produced before Anaconda this actually slightly innovative I presume. As expected there's a few ticks running about, ticks that are large compared with average ticks but aren't say, giant monster size. They also sometimes burrow into their victims, causing average encounters to be pretty gory.Pretty generic, but Carlton's actor of "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" playing a street thug was pretty entertaining. "Ticks" isn't bad although it's nothing I'd recommend.
I wanted to see Ticks for years! My local Blockbuster use to have a copy on VHS, but it was never in. It never did come in so I finally decided to just buy the movie. I'll have to say this movie was worth the long wait. Ticks has some great special effects and some very memorable scenes. Clint Howard is in the movie for quite awhile, he has one disgusting yet hilarious scene involving Ticks! You've also got Seth Green and the lady that played in Pinocchio's Revenge as the girl's mom. Ticks is about this group of teenagers that go in the woods to bond with each other. They don't end up bonding though, but the ticks sure like to bond to them. The ticks in this movie looked very creepy and were very well made too. I figured they'd look cheap, boy was I wrong. They ran, got bigger and even crawled around in places I never thought possible. This is a great horror comedy and one of the best killer ticks movies possibly ever made! I highly recommend it to any fan of killer bug type movies! Ticks gets a blood sucking 10/10
