The Presence

In this darkly romantic ghost story, a woman travels to an isolated cabin where she is stalked by an apparition who inhabits her space as his own. With the unexpected arrival of the woman’s boyfriend, the dark spirit’s haunting grows obsessive. Soon the woman begins to exhibit weirdly irrational behavior as the thin line between sanity and possession begins to unravel. Is she battling her inner demons, or is a much darker presence threatening them all?

I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.

Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.

One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.

Was pretty to look at, but that was the only thing positive. The movie is about a woman and a man that are alone in a cabin, whilst being unknowingly being stalked by a ghost. And a metaphorical devil manipulating all of them also, because what else would a metaphorical devil do. The movie end with a literal deus ex machina saving the day. And a sequel bait. The movie fails being as eerie as they tries to be, and fails with the drama, by trying to keep the eerie feeling. And the only character having autonomy in the movie is the metaphorical devil, and the literal deus ex machina. Which are dull. And by some reason birds are tossed at outhouses.

Unexpected, and very moving. Very nice, simple and understated, beautifully shot and well acted, It had many layers; How we deal with our own demons, and how in truth, we are not alone. We are influenced by our own personal ghosts, memories of things past, and events that shape us. I had never heard of this movie, but it deserves a lot more attention.I recommend the watch, Do not expect a horror show, although it does have some spooky moments, Let the mood sink in, The pacing is slow and deliberate. That's the way it was meant to be. Just let the story tell itself. I do not believe there is a need for an explanation, the events seem straight forward. One would have to be rather dense to miss the point, and for that matter, the beauty, although symbolism abounds. What you will not find is; Over the top Paranormal Activity cliché's, Evil Dead bloodbaths, or Cabin in the Wood's boogie men. If that is what you are looking for, look elsewhere. The spoiler ? If the spell works, you may find it uplifting.

This is perhaps one of the best films I have ever seen. Being a very 'wordy' person, I find it beyond amazing to see how much Shane West could draw out the character and personality of the 'ghost' without uttering a word. He acts with every inch of his body and displays emotions on his face and in his eyes better than most who have words to further their objective. To say he is talented is a gross understatement.I was well pleased with all the actors and the way they were able to interpret their role. I particularly liked Justin Kirk's portrayal of the man. He was warm, supportive and loving toward the woman, even when she was quite literally coming apart at her mental and emotional seams. The freedom to interpret just what the ghost and the man in black represent adds dimension to the film in a way not seen often in the horror genre. The actions of the ghost in the closing minutes of the film give teeth to an already difficult role to portray. Learning the decisions he made and the effect those decisions had on the outcome is gratifying, especially if you are one that finds certain satisfaction from knowing you were able to unravel the plot as the film developed.I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys a film that makes you think and will most definitely watch it again. The absence of dialog in so much of the film creates a challenge to the viewer to know the characters well and pay close attention to every small detail. Those cumulative details build a story you will not be disappointed in from professionals whom you will admire more highly by the end of the film.

I went into this film innocently, I came out finding it ...stupid, grotesque. I found it interesting, daring. That lack of dialog (not forced but due to solitude of characters), that ambitious music which pretty much works (almost fully fledged 'old- style' organic symphonic orchestration), the beautiful photography, some eery feeling that went beyond what I expected of this film, and given its very low votes. I was, I could even say, 'into' the film. Which is not bad at all considering I am a difficult film spectator, not least because I have directed 5 features. But then... . The whole things came tumbling down with one stupid, stupid stroke of narrative stupidity: once again, ONCE AGAIN, just at the crux of when we are to understand the curious, if not downright ...stupid behaviour from the protagonist, just when things are starting to have to start making sense, we are thrown into the most trite, basic narrative trick, the most North-American over-used audience manipulation, the simplest way out, the easiest way to trap people's attention and trick them into 'empathy' for the lead character, yes, you guessed it... we discover the lead was raped by her father as a child. Yawn, yawn, triple yawn. What a waste, what artistic dishonesty to fall prey to such easy crass tricks. When, when will American films learned to go beyond that plain manipulation? When will they realize that for one 100% of people have not been raped in childhood, and that it just doesn't work anymore to use an over-used socially fashionable (for the last 20 years) cheap artifice. As a film teacher, I would say 'oh, for God's sake! What do you think you are doing? Do you take all viewers for imbeciles? Go back and re-write the story, work on it like you were paid to do so, and stop taking the easy way out of a narrative dullness'. Film director's should NOT have to be lectured to, they are supposed to be professionals.
