Entertaining from beginning to end, it maintains the spirit of the franchise while establishing it's own seal with a fun cast

While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.

Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.

This was a good movie but I still contend that my favorite subterranean movie is "The Descent". "Beneath" had some good cinematography with the darkness and the pervasive closed in and claustrophobic feeling in the collapsed mine. There was a lot of suspense and heart pounding moments as well.Where this movie failed, and not immensely, is by following the same tropes that most scary movies follow. When the movie started a rescuer stated that he found a survivor. As soon as I saw the cast of characters going down the mine I immediately knew who that survivor was. To be fair, that survivor wasn't unscathed but the survivor was predictable nonetheless. Along with the survivor cliché there was the cliché of cowards die and heroes die; the only difference is that cowards die screaming and heroes die honorably.Besides the age old clichés this movie was strong. I liked the acting, the set, the story and the tension created. If only they could shake the predictability.

Trapped underground with something rather freaky going on; how scary you find that premise depends on how you react at a visceral level to being stuck underground in a confined space. This movie treads rather similar ground to "Descent", though less successfully, as it fails to sustain prolonged tension and (a common failing of horror movies) the characters don't always act or react as you'd expect under the circumstances. There are a few effective scares along the way, but nothing very memorable. On the plus side, the acting is decent and one knows enough about most of the characters to have some vested interest in whether they survive. On the debit side, it is never explained what is causing the transformations into zombie-ish murderers, leaving some events to appear as if at random. Lots goes in the near dark, so be prepared to be squinting at the screen from time to time unless viewing in ideal conditions.Overall, a decent Decent-like horror that passes the time.

Beneath is the story of a group of miners who get into trouble after a cave-in traps them hundreds of feet underground. Help is expected within 72 hours, so the group hold out in a specially made chamber built for emergencies. However, what they didn't expect is to start hearing & seeing things, and as panic & paranoia start to set in, the miner's start to gradually turn on each other.Beneath is a very under-rated little movie, and is much better than some people give it credit for. Whether they were expecting a Descent type of horror, or something more like the usual "more gore, less story" types we are used to, I don't know, but whatever it is, the movie is nowhere near as bad as they say it is.Beneath is the kind of film that plays a lot on people's fears such as claustrophobia, being trapped, and the darkness rather than relying on visuals & gore all the time. You do see certain things and there is some gore, but this isn't the main reliant to scare the audience...the atmosphere is, and it is put to good use as it brings out quite a good few creepy moments throughout. The tension & suspense is also really good, and this builds nicely as the film goes on. It's not one of those movies where you get a build up to nothing much then a long dull lull before another build up. The visuals for some of the creepy moments are really well done, especially for a low-budget movie. They aren't cheap, cheesy looking effects, and they do genuinely freak you out somewhat. Add this to the really good atmosphere I mentioned and you have yourself an enjoyable chiller of a movie. Also just as a quick note, it says at the start of the movie that it's inspired by true events. This doesn't mean it's a true story. A true story and inspired by true events are totally different, so don't complain you can't find anything on the story and that you got a pile of "made up rubbish".Well written, well acted, and well filmed. Definitely recommended.

I had to see this because mines, along with the ocean, are such a fascinating, fertile realm for scary movies -- the pretense of fear is already in the back of most people's mind. I really liked this movie. The cast had excellent chemistry and easily played off each others strengths, and most importantly to me, their characters didn't seem as contrived or cliché as most do nowadays. It felt so fresh considering all the crappy horror movies that rely on special effects, cheap scares and shaky cams. I was very impressed by everyone, but especially Lauren Gores. She's a very attractive, intelligent actress with a good sense of how to appear truly frightened. I was immediately drawn into the suspenseful buildup of the plot by her reactions as someone unfamiliar with the mining experience. They became convincingly intensified by the fears of the more seasoned crew as things began to go very wrong, and the fabric of their sense of the predictability of the situation began to tear at the seams. I don't think intelligent viewers need their interest piqued by the commercially invoked and debatable premise that there was some kind of supernatural force down there. It's scary enough to think about the real beasts of lust and violence that humans can become when under duress, whether it's fear of another race, religion or their own growing insanity due to unknown, invisible forces.
