It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.

Starring three of horror cinema's greatest icons - Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, and Christopher Lee - this rather atypical American International Pictures release consists of several seemingly disparate plot threads that director Gordon Hessler attempts to pull together in the final act, with little success, the ending almost as confusing as everything that precedes it.The film opens with a jogger collapsing and waking up in a hospital bed where he finds that he is missing a leg! The action then cuts to an unspecified Eastern European country where Konratz (Marshall Jones) is killing his dictatorial superiors in a bid to seize power. Meanwhile, a murder investigation leads London police detective Supt. Bellaver (Alfred Marks) to the home of Dr. Browning (Vincent Price). Christopher Lee appears as Fremont, a government official who is trying to secure the release of a spy, and Cushing, in what amounts to little more than a brief cameo, plays one of those who stands in the way of Konratz's climb to the top. While there are some decent scenes along the way, including a perilous car chase, and a killer ripping off his own hand to escape from the police, the choppy nature of the narrative and the disappointing ending make Scream and Scream Again a far from essential 70s horror, despite its trio of genre greats. If you want to see Price, Cushing and Lee together in a good film, I recommend The House Of The Long Shadows: it's much more fun, and you get John Carradine thrown in for good measure.

This is a movie starring horror icons Christopher Lee, Vincent Price and Peter Cushing but yet it is still a movie only a handful of people know off and have actually seen. There really is a very simple explanation for that; the movie just really isn't that good. The main and biggest problem I had with this movie was that for 75% you have absolutely no idea what is going on and what its mystery is all supposed to be about. It's all being told so vaguely and loosely that you simply start to give up to try and make sense of it all. It's of course fine for a movie to be mysterious but they should at least had given the audience something and should have had explained certain things far earlier in the movie. Now, when the big 'twists' comes you just don't care about it anymore because everything that came before it was told in such a terribly non-engaging and uninteresting way.Even after finishing this movie, it still leaves far more questions than answers. Some things simply happen in the movie and you have to take a lot of things for granted. Such as for instance; what was with that whole Nazi-like group of people? Who or what were they supposed to be or represent and why and how exactly were they in so much control of things?I can definitely recognize the movie for what it was trying to be and do and I also still could really appreciate it for that. It tried to be more like early '60's mystery movies, that often involved a detective in the search off a killer and it often had a sort of horror/science-fiction twist and vibe to it all. And it's still truly being such a movie with its atmosphere, characters, main plot, music and whatever more, it just still isn't really a good movie at all. You could say and think that the movie should at least be watchable because it features Cushing, Lee and Price in it but the truth is that most of them are hardly in this movie at all and they get far too little interesting to do. The one that plays the biggest role is Lee, as the good guy for a change. And my goodness, at first I didn't even recognized him since he's using such a thick British accent in this movie and he really isn't using his own, very distinctive, voice at all. I still really liked him in his role and I though he did a great job at it but still his character was a bit of a stiff one and not all that suitable or likable enough to become the main 'hero' of the movie. Cushing's and Price's role is far more worthless. What even was the point of Cushing's character in this? And Price only shows up a couple of times and suddenly only starts to get more important toward the movie its end.It definitely does has some value to it and the movie also still has its moments but overall it's a far too messily told and written movie to become a good one.5/10 http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/

This is one of my all-time favorite horror movies. I saw it when it was first released almost 40 years ago, and I have watched it many times since. At first, this appears to be four quite separate movies all rolled into one. There's a mad doctor movie starring Vincent Price and assorted body parts. Then there's a modern-day vampire movie with Michael Gothard as the blood drinker and Alfred Marks as the intrepid inspector on his trail. There's an espionage movie with Christopher Lee at the helm. And, finally, a movie set in a country with a Nazi-like government, with Peter Cushing as the Supreme Leader and Marshall Jones as his much-too-ambitious subordinate.Gradually, the various strands deftly begin coming together, like the pieces in a jigsaw puzzle, until we finally see the complete picture. I actually enjoyed this movie more on my second viewing, as I could more clearly see the picture taking shape. I will say nothing more about the plot(s), but for those who want to learn more, and don't mind spoilers, there's a link to an excellent synopsis on the main page.Because of the film's complex structure, the three masters of horror -- Price, Lee, and Cushing -- share no screen time together with the exception of a brief (but important) scene involving Price and Lee. Cushing and Lee have roles that are little more than cameos. Price's role as the mad doctor is more substantial, and this is vintage Price at his hammiest and most endearing. Marks is drolly funny as the very British police superintendent, Gothard is appropriately creepy as the almost superhuman blood drinker, and Jones is a villain to be reckoned with. The director, Gordon Hessler, is a longtime collaborator of Alfred Hitchcock, and he also produced and directed some of American International's Edgar Allan Poe movies. For those who are incapable of non-linear thinking, this movie may appear to be a chaotic mess, but I enjoyed it immensely and will certainly watch it again next time it shows up (without commercials) on a cable channel.

Despite the title and promise of three horror titans teaming up, SCREAM AND SCREAM AGAIN is a bust. Vincent Price plays a mad scientist working for some vague army of lunatics bent on taking over the world...Christopher Lee is a British government official who may or may not be in on it. Peter Cushing pops up in a (very) brief cameo. Most of the film centers on the police trying to track down a "vampire killer" and as such, it's not too bad, just don't expect Price, Lee and Cushing to be sharing much screen time. Gordon Hessler's direction is alternately clever (he stages a few very good chase scenes) and oddly edited (there are far too many abrupt edits and Price's wrap up of the plot is really silly). There's very little to actually scream at...the film is not scary in the least.
