I love this movie so much
Touches You
Memorable, crazy movie
Good concept, poorly executed.
This episode is written for all parents who wish to protect their children from all harm. You have to admit that during the first 25 minutes many of you thought that Arkangel seems like something you might consider buying. You would be able to see whether the babysitter is treating your child all right, whether the school teachers or other kids do not abuse your child at school... It is quite tempting to have this kind of control. What differentiates Arkangel from other Black Mirror episodes is that it doesn't seem to be filmed in the future. The only device that stands out is Arkangel itself - which is something very probable in the near future. Right now my son has a smartwatch that enables me to locate him (which is fine for a 7 year old) and well as listen to what he says and hears without him knowing that I am spying on him! But if you control your child like this you cannot develop a trusting relationship... therefore I would never use this option. What follows in the second part of the episode is a natural consequence of a relationship not based on trust but on control. It's ending might seem shocking to regular folks but we are Black Mirror fans alter all - we got quite used to escalation of violence - though it wasn't necessary in my opinion. Making your own daughter want to run away is the most painful punishment of all.
I'm only a little way in to this episode, maybe it wont bother anyone else but it's irritating me that when the girl goes from being little to maybe around 11 or so, she apparently changes from being right handed to left handed, that's a careless mistake to me.
What I enjoy about "Black Mirror" is that many of the episodes look at modern technology and anticipate their potential abuses and down-sides. In this case, the notion of being a helicopter parent is taken to an amazing level...thanks to tracking software and iPad-like devices. The story begins with a baby being born and all seems well. But when the little girl later walks off and the mom is panicked, she picks an unusual way to protect her child...she has a chip installed in her called 'Arkangel' and it tracks her. But the chip can do much more. It can actually filter out negative images and content...and the mother decides to use this as well. So, instead of seeing blood and violence and bad behavior, the child just sees pixilated images and cannot hear the awfulness. Sounds like a great idea, huh? Well...as the child grows, it's like having NSA inside her head...and the repercussions are awful. The most interesting thing about this story is that it was directed by Jodie Foster (yes, THAT Jodie Foster). This, along with some impressive location shoots in ensuing episodes shows that this show has found an audience! As for this particular episode, while it's not among the best, it is quite disturbing and well made....and well worth your time.
A way too old De Witt has a child who has a child that escapes a park; despite being closed in, then has a procedure done that keeps her on 24 hour surveillance. Disgustingly she is prevented from experiencing anything stressful. You know like real life. We are laughingly led to believe that the Mother is that paranoid but allows her to walk 2 miles to school ALL BY HERSELF. If she was attacked or abducted her Mother would not be able to save her. She turns into a 20 year..........uh I mean 15 year old who has porn sex her first time. Didn't hurt or anything. She ends up turning into a psychopath because.........well just because. Good performances but very little makes sense. Worst episode of the season of the 4 I've watched.
