Best movie ever!
This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
The movie is wonderful and true, an act of love in all its contradictions and complexity
I didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
Mariyaan comes as a serious drama thriller with a strong and soulful love story on the backdrop. The story claims that it is loosely based on the true story about three immigrant oil workers who were kidnapped by the terrorists in Sudan back in 2008.Let's first start with the back bone of the movie that is the plot it is about two things in life 1.Love and 2.Survival of the fittest. As the two contrasting things the films also opens like two parts one love and coastal life near Kanyakumari and the other is survival life in Sudan. These tracks travel side by side in the film and finally we see the actual soulful merge. The cinematography by the renowned Belgian Marc Koninckx brings life on the two contrasting terrains of the story 1.Coastal region of southern Tamil Nadu 2.Desserts of Sudan,Africa. His cinematography is simply brilliant which gives life to the story. The lead actors of the movie rather the pillars of the story were Parvathy and Dhanush. They both have done a scintillating performance. They were brilliant and competing each other. Particularly the lady lead Parvathy Menon of the movie "Poo" fame didn't allow the lead male character Mariyaan to overshadow her skills at any place making us say superb acting. Dhanush is becoming an iconic and most important actor in Indian film industry. He is in the right track and has used this opportunity to grab the next national Award. Other actors Jagan and Appukutty as friends did their parts well. The little odd on characterization was the heroine's father and the hero's mother it was too artificial to look young people with older getup instead they could have given it to some good old character artists in the industry.Director Bharath Bala is joining hands with ARR after vande matram their duo has worked well and has created the necessary magic through music on screen. As per the songs I felt it good along with the movie rather as an individual album.Worth mention would be the hallucination scene which brought Cheetah on screen and the underwater sequences were marvelous. The film's length could have been little less but that does not stop me saying this is a good masterpiece in Tamil cinema.Verdict: A worth watch movie for real story and acting based movie lovers. Otherwise commercial movie lovers stay away from this flick!!-Reviewed by Sivakumar Balachandran([email protected])
First off, without a shadow of a doubt, I'm going on the record and saying that Dhanush is the best actor of his generation bar none. This film further highlights his acting prowess (which we, the Tamil film audience have grown accustomed to) that began with 'Kadhal Kondein' and continued with superlative performances in 'Pudhupettai', 'Polladhavan', 'Aadukalam', 'Mayakkam Enna', '3' & the recently released 'Raanjhanaa'. He carries this film on his fragile shoulders through scenes of joy, love, hate, anger, despair & helplessness. We laugh with him during his fun times and we anguish with him when he suffers. The story itself had the potential to be superb (it being based on a true event that saw four Indian oil platform workers abducted and held for ransom in North Africa), however Bharat Bala did not do justice with his extremely weak screenplay. This is his Indian feature film debut (having previously directed a short film, a documentary, a foreign film & a few ads and music videos) and it is glaringly evident that he has a long way to go. His screenplay fails to sustain the viewers attention, to be honest if not for the lead pair, many would not have watched till the end. The pace is extremely slow, which is fine if the scenes are not disjointed, however it feels like there one too many unnecessary scenes. The African villains were poorly conceived as neither were their motives explained nor were they engaging. They were basically cut board cutouts of continental African caricatures. 'Kadal Rasaa' song felt out of place, the idea was great but could have been explored differently. The notion that a fisherman is at his strongest only in his element, the sea, is fantastic and proves to be the plus point in the climax. The lead pair has performed excellently, their chemistry is very prominent. The slow build up of their love is refreshing and funny. Parvathy Menon's acting deserves praise, and she looks great as a village belle. Dhanush really tugs at your heartstrings in certain scenes especially the second half when he is a hostage. That phone call scene will leave you reeling. You will know what I mean when you watch it, I wouldn't want to spoil too much. The rest of the cast have been grossly underused except for Jagan & Appukutty. It is a shame to see Salim Kumar's talents wasted as the father of Parvathy's character. After all, he also won the National Award for Best Actor for his heart wrenching performance in 2010 Malayalam film 'Adaminte Makan Abu' (incidentally he was a joint winner with Dhanush that year).A.R. Rahman was at his ethereal best as both his songs & background score was pure aural ecstasy. Although all the songs were great, the best was saved for last, as 'Nenjae Ezhu' coupled with an amazing visual spectacle could not be topped by the rest of the songs. A big kudos to Mark Koninckx, a Belgian who is pretty well known in his country but whose only previous claim to international fame was the unheralded 2008 Franco-Liberian film 'Johnny Mad Dog'. His framing and angles were evocative. Be it the fishing hamlet that is beautifully hugged by the blue sea or the harsh dry dessert that is both arid & stunning to look at.On the surface of it all, this is just a love story that could have been brilliant if it had been supplemented by a better plot twist. I give it 7/10, mainly for the lead pair's performance which was complimented superbly by Rahman's magical tunes & Koninckx's visual feast
This film is, was and will always be amazing. It was an amazing experience from director Bharatbala, Oscar-winning A.R. Rahman, and of course National award winning actor Dhanush. Firstly, the film had the best cinematography ever, kudos to the Belgian film maker, Marc Koninckx. The music was of course, breath-taking, no doubt about that. The story was simple and perfect to fit the 'hope' theme promised. Every actor in this movie has obviously given their best, mainly actor Dhanush. The first half of the film reveals his origins as a fisherman, while the second half is mainly in Africa, depicting his working life there. Every frame of this film has been shot with meaning and realism. This movie, in my opinion, has surpassed many Hollywood films in many ways. Overall, Maryan is an amazing masterpiece and is highly recommended for 'A' class audiences only. 9.0/10 (88%)
Maryan is filled with lot of emotion, pain, struggle and heart wrenching love... Only Dhanush can do this type of role, with his impressing expressions, lovely smile, heart touching emotional scenes, his Hardwork shows in each and every frame, sure another national award is waiting for him.Although the first half will be slow that didn't damage the plot its going very well with cast.Parvathy Wow really stupendous performance from her, cute and beautiful Paru impresses so much.Second half no words to express truly realistic Mindblowing.Cinematography by Marc is major highlight of the movie his powerful lens captures the locations very well, kudos to him also.Editing by Vivek Harshan is sharp doesn't spoil the movie, Bharat Bala came up with an emotional tale of love,he takes Tamil cinema to next level. Last but not least A.R.RAHMAN is there any word to praise him more, songs are very emotional and Marvellous, his terrific Bgm carries the movie as soul to the end.Movie is technically brilliantMaryan-Dhanush and A.R.RAHMAN steals the show.Hats off to the entire crewMy rating-10/10Go and experience it
