Memorable, crazy movie
A Major Disappointment
a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
In the fog, all roads lead to a cemetery where folks crash their vehicles and stay at the local mansion which show signs of a haunting. Possibly inspired by a Scooby-doo episode, the haunted tale gives you characters and motive early on. I didn't find any of it interesting or entertaining. My copy was fuzzy.Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.
Another film from the Drive-in 50-pack collection. It's under the name "The Murder Mansion" in the pack. It's actually one of the better films in the collection. The movie is far from outstanding but it's actually a decent film. A pleasant surprise in the collection - it is entertaining. It's a horror-thriller with a bit of mystery thrown in. Worth watching if you ever happen to find it on TV or in a movie pack.A group of people get blinded by the thick, thick fog... they cannot drive further. They end up in a creepy mansion and wind up staying the night there. The owner tells them some weird stories and strange things begin to happen. Is it ghosts? Is it vampires? You'll have to watch to find out.Good story to watch late at night.6.5/10
Spook perv happenings in a (dense) fog shrouded mansion? We're in giallo territory, right? Rich heiress Elsa is on her way to some town to meet her lawyer and sign some documents regarding something or other when she ends up in dense fog and crashes her car. Also caught in the dense fog is our hero and a hitchhiker who have had a run in with perv Franco Fantasia (who, in the dense fog, crashes his car into the lawyer's), and have also nearly been run over (in dense fog) by a creepy chauffeur driving (in dense fog) a Rolls Royce (in dense fog). Elsa also has a run in with this chauffeur and another mysterious figure (in dense fog but also in a cemetery) before hooking up with our hero and heading for a creepy mansion (in dense fog), where they meet everyone else. The mansion is surrounded by dense fog for the duration of the film. This mansion is owned by a creepy woman who invites them to stay but also explains that the previous owner, her aunt or something, died in a car crash whilst being driven by her chauffeur (in dense fog? I'm not sure if she mentions fog) and that there was vampires and such like. Which is a sure fine way to have your guests settle down for the night, not that it seems to bother our hero and the hitchhiker, who have sex right there in the living room while Franco watches from the shadows, hitting the hooch and being all jealous and that (he'd previously tried to put the moves on the hitchhiker at the start of the film). Before you know it the zombie chauffeur is turning up in people's rooms, even scaring one of them to death, the owner of the house starts putting the Sapphic moves on Elsa (this being a Spanish/Italian film, after all). There's a secret passage in the cellar and dead bodies, crypts and such like. This reminded me an awful lot of Seven Deaths in the Cat's Eye, which also had a secret passageway leading to a crypt. It also reminded me of Seven Deaths in the Cat's Eye because both copies are blurry as hell and hard to make out. A mysterious figure also turns up at some point later in the film and many twists and turns are introduced. This guy has the hat and the gloves of your usual giallo villain, so you can be sure he's not there to check the gas meter. That said, it's fairly easy to figure out what's going on, and mio Dio does this film like to take it's time! After having a long, long set up, you're already for the murders to start happening, when instead we get a lengthy flashback sequence. However, unlike a lot of films where not a whole lot goes on, this is an Italian/Spanish production so there's heaps of stylish camera-work and lush visuals and groovy music. No nudity and very little gore, but a nice atmosphere and even a couple of scares thrown in.To summarise: If you have to see every giallo ever made, don't put this one too high on your list. Low on the usual giallo things (boobs, blood) but high on style, atmosphere, and dense fog.
I just started working my way through the Chilling Classics 50 Movie Pack Collection and MURDER MANSION is the first movie in the set. MURDER MANSION is just my kind of old-fashioned, B-grade horror movie. It is an especially creepy thriller! In a series of convoluted happenstance, several people end up stranded in a mansion in the middle of nowhere. Apparently, to escape a fog-bound night, although one couple and a woman traveling alone claim to have been cut off by the same car – a Rolls Royce, no less! The mansion is next to a cemetery, where it seems that the undead abound well, at least a chauffeur and his elderly mistress. Martha provides the back-story as one of vampires overrunning the town, which is used to explain the deserted village but, hardly anyone is surprised to hear such a tale. Same with the story of her old Aunt, who is purported to be a witch. But, when Martha describes the death of her aunt; and, the death of her chauffeur, Elsa nearly suffers an apoplectic fit! Like other Italian horror films of its day, MURDER MANSION features beautiful cinematography. It also features a suitable mansion – surprisingly well-maintained public areas, sufficient living quarters; and, an abysmal cellar! The film is rather thin on plot; but, the dubbed-in dialogue (done after filming)is actually quite good.Ida Galli (Martha), Analía Gade (Elsa), and Lisa Leonardi (Laura) are exceptionally well cast; and, offer apt performances. The score can be a bit jarring; but, it serves the purpose of intensifying the atmosphere and the action. The film digresses into a sordid affair between Elsa's father and her classmate; a philandering, gun-toting drunk on the prowl for any woman with a pulse (or, perhaps without one); and, free-love between Fred and Laura, two young folks traveling by motorcycle.Yes, the plot reads more like a melodrama than a horror movie. But, I liked MURDER MANSION well enough.
