Good story, Not enough for a whole film
This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
Dear Anurag Kashyap, Is the Bombay shown in this movie real? Were there really clubs like the one in the movie back in the 1960's? And were there such decked up classy looking singers, dancers and stand up comedians in these clubs? I find it hard to believe. I have read about V.S.Naipaul's travels across Bombay in his book An Area of Darkness. The book paints a different picture of Bombay in the 1960's. Naipaul described it as a dreadful and crowded place where people had no individuality. I thought your film was quite uninspired. I could not watch more than half of it. The problem with the film was that it spent too much time showing off the sets and the jazz clubs. The clubs and the jazz music needed to be in the background but somehow they encroach into other areas of the film. They serve as a distraction and not as a feature of the film that lends weight to the narrative.Another source of irritation for me was the acting. I guess you had to cast phony and overrated actors like Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma to finance this 120 crore film. The actors were described perfectly during a discussion on the Indian cinema board on IMDb by another user - they simply slog through their roles. Karan Johar had reasonably good screen presence. But his performance was nothing to write home about - he does not take too many risks and simply underplays it. Ranbir Kapoor was unbearable. He seemed to be working under the impression that playing an upstart working class man involves making silly faces and running around like a monkey. I cannot understand the excessive praise for the actor who played Chiman. I am sure he would be forgotten like Deepak Dobriyal (who was unnecessarily hyped up after an above average performance in Omkara). Also, there were too many wooden actors in the supporting roles. The film was nice to look at. But I cannot remember a single scene that stood out. It all seemed so counterfeit.Bombay Velvet was a disappointment. But I will definitely watch your next film, Anurag. Best Regards, Pimpin.
Seriously.. A movie made with a poor cast, worse camera-work, still worse direction and really bad script. What triggered this movie is another question I my mind. But maybe the director has been so self indulgent that you can never figure what triggered this movie. Waste of time for me. An example of how loads of poor movies receive good reception in India. This movie further degrades kashyap's (director) already degrading movie. If a book is written ever on the fall of kashyap's career, this movie will appear in golden words. Lastly, while the makers do not forget to thank Raveena tandon for a forgettable apppearance, they again fail to address the name of the person on whose book this movie is loosely based on .. Technically, Poor music, weak dialogues, unnecessary script, avoidable movie.
If you get a string of frames where crude ambitions with raw lust for opulence & perennial conspiracies interlace with impeccable crescendo of trumpets in the background, what do you create? That's right! An era of newly-independent India hustling with 'Influencers' & anti-socialists; an era where white collars outshone black deeds & an era where crime was more suave & sexy and less brutal & violent. Welcome to Bombay Velvet! The perfectly 'CGI-ed' backdrop creates a credible establishment to foster Johnny Balraj's big shot dream & offers a charismatic collision with Rosie's edgy life. What's probably missing in this mammoth movie is the tightening of the screenplay (specially in the 2nd half) which would have made it gripping and would've raised more 'oompphss' or 'yeaaahhs' in the minds of the audience. Ranbir Kapoor is nifty but misses out (by an inch) on the 'hunger' which Emraan Hashmi had in OUATIM. If you go without any pre-conceived notions, then Karan Johar makes a formidable acting debut. But the star? Amit Trivedi. Pure brilliance who has managed to add favourable taste to the moods. All in all, this high-budget experiment of Anurag "Common Man's Scorsese" Kashyap is definitely worth a watch! #bombayvelvet #bollywood
As we all know there is very weak story in this movie Bombay velvet. but there is very strong storytelling. and the music of this movie, Amit trivedi has done a very great job. let me be very honest, I'm a very big fan of anurag kashyap cinema. and this movie is also a part of it. that's not the reason I like the movie that its been directed by AK. its also a small reason but the acting has been done by Ranbir kapoor. I just loved it. I found some great dialogues in the movie. camera working is extraordinary. that is also following anurag kashyap. karan johar was good. not extraordinary. but why I liked the whole plot I don't know. my heart says its a masterpiece!
