A Major Disappointment
The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.
What an utter load of pretentious nonsense. A film should be a story, that story ought to engage you, and entertain or inform you in some way. This film does none of that. I fell asleep twice while I tried to finish it, and I really resented having to watch til the end, I feel I let myself down and ought to have not wasted a full hour and a half on it. Some say it is Lynch-esque. That's simply trying to help justify wasting a small part of your life on it, and imbue it with some sort of historical validation from a supposed great director. The truth is it is Lynch-esque because like some David Lynch films, they're disjointed and disconnected scenes pretending to be art but instead simply being bad stories, badly filmed and with no real flow or point to them. Throughout the film Ewan McGregors character wears trousers much too short which shows him looking slightly ridiculous. Supposedly this is because in one tiny scene he appears to this way to Ryan Goslings character who is lying on the ground looking up at him. Firstly, we don't see that view, and secondly even if we did how could we possibly connect the two things? And even if it was possibly to connect the two things....why?? Why would you make a person seem ridiculous through a whole film just because of one view another person had that we didn't even see? I don't rate Ewan McGregor anyway I think he's highly overrated. Naomi Watts acts very well, but she acts the same person in every single film she does so I don't really rate her either. Honestly, if like me you came late to the party and haven't watched this yet...please, don't! You will regret the waste of time.
This movie is so underrated, it is a really really brilliant movie! It's really sad that not a lot of people know this movie, I myself just watched it a week ago. It's super confusing, the plot is unbelievable, I just love it! All the actors did a really good job, I really couldn't understand what was going on in this movie, I was trying to figure it out but everything didn't make any sense to me, so I couldn't find an answer. Even after the last scene, I was still trying to understand the movie. And I couldn't. And this is why I said this movie is brilliant, you have to watch it twice or pay a really good attention during the movie to understand it completely. I googled the movie plot after I watched it because TBH I was still confused. And when I found out, I was so surprised and I just thought this movie is really a masterpiece.
It's clear after the first 10 minutes that something is wrong with the psychiatrist (Ewan McGregor) and from that moment on, the film cannot be taken for real anymore - anything that happens is bound to be a metaphor. Nothing of course can be spelled out clearly, else the thrill/fun/tension would be gone. So people talk confusing stuff and all the details seem important - the whole movie must be important, because it all sound and looks so mysterious, so meaningful, like a over sized jigsaw puzzle. And the music - wow! It really fits in.The resolution (obviously in the last 5 minutes only) is different from what I expected, but I guess it is even more confusing than the rest of the movie. Nothing very bright. The movie definitely wants to transport some messages - everything is interwoven, we are all connected with each other, every little move we make counts. Whilst the cause for the whole confusion (which is revealed in the end) is a very realistic situation, what comes out of it (the 1.5 hours before the end) is a confused exercise in psychological common knowledge and esoteric babble.People say this move is artistic. Well, it's not. It does not transport anything beyond the obvious mainstream believes in how the human mind works in mysterious ways. Just because it is boring does not automatically mean it is art.
If you spend the time to watch this movie from beginning to end, hoping for a brilliant resolution to an extremely layered plot, you will be disappointed. I found this movie completely vapid, after promising to be brilliant. The production designers made a gorgeous work of art with all kinds of nods & winks included, a busy background of suspicious distractions to draw our attention away from the fact that nothing makes sense. Even if this movie is some kind of study in overlaps between waking & dream states, it never delivers anything. Everything is beautiful, from Ewan McGregor to Naomi Watts to Ryan Gosling to Janeane Garafolo to NYC to the architectural chess set. It's all vacuumed & coiffed & shined up & cheated with special effects to make it all the more glossy & glimmery. But what promises to be a never-before-conceived-of psychological thriller ends up being a pile of unresolved detritus. Don't get your hopes up. Submerge yourself in the shiny pretty sets & clothes & pictures. That's all there is here.
