Better Late Then Never
This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
In person LBJ was simply not a very likable guy. I do think it was pretty historically accurate. Mostly about the Civil Rights struggles of 1963 and 1964. It's just not that much fun to watch the political sausage being made. I don't think LBJ is sugar-coated by this portrayal; if anything I doubt he was as paranoid as he is portrayed here.
All the Way is a great TV movie with a very well developed plot and an outstanding cast. It is very engrossing as we follow US president Lyndon B. Johnson in his first year in office. We are captivated almost immediately as it kicks off straight with him learning of the death of JFK, and discovering he is now the most powerful man in the world. His world is soon turned upside down with all these new expectations and responsibilities, it is truly fascinating to see how he handled this first hand.I think there could have been a bit more set up to the main story, instead of having it kick off almost immediately. I would like to have seen a brief period focusing on John F. Kennedy prior to his assassination, and to give the audience a feel for the relationship between him and LBJ, it would have been an interesting way to begin this film. The performances are stellar, there is not a poor portrayal here, Bryan Cranston absolutely shines as LBJ. Being a role he had already perfected on Broadway, you could really see him slipping in to this part effortlessly. Anthony Mackie is also stellar as Martin Luther King, conveying the man's struggles and aspirations with great purity, as well as subtlety, his scenes with Cranston were without a doubt the highlight for me.Told in a powerful, inspired manner. Very well acted and intriguing, All the Way is certainly worth the watch for anyone looking for a good drama or biography film. Follows Lyndon B. Johnson in his first year as president after the assassination of JFK. Best Performance: Bryan Cranston
Lyndon Johnson becomes the President of the United States in the chaotic aftermath of John F. Kennedy's assassination and spends his first year in office fighting to pass the Civil Rights Act. A great biography starring Bryan Cranston as President? Hell yes this movie was really good and the makeup alongside the prosthetics were terrific especially on Cranston's character. All the Way does have it's flaws tho which is mostly the slow pacing but other than that this was a great movie with a powerful message, outstanding performances by the entire cast and it also has Steven Spielberg as an Executive Producer so yeah this movie is definitely worth your time. (7.3/10)
A remarkable performance by Bryan Cranston who looks a lot like LBJ here with the prosthetic nose. One of the best biopic physical transformations. Besides the physical side, the impassioned acting and the accent are just so convincing, you wish there was more of his life shown eg a miniseries. There have been other films like 'Path to War' about LBJ's role in the Vietnam War. This movie is mainly about the passing of the Civil Rights Bill and his election victory. I saw the play on Broadway and this movie does expand on it by showing glimpses of the assassination, Mississippi murders and touching on Gulf of Tonkin. A lot of characters are shown - it's a bit hard to keep track of, from segregationists politicians to the aides and civil rights activists. Melissa Leo has a pretty good physical likeness to Lady Bird. Anthony Mackie on the other hand is too slim looking to play Martin Luther King. Of all the actors they could have chosen. Worst physical likeness on screen of MLK ever. This is worth watching. Just wish there was more ground covered. Look at the other people who have played LBJ like Michael Gambon and you will see how good Bryan Cranston is. Hoping there will be a sequel.
