Truly Dreadful Film
This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Amazing worth wacthing. So good. Biased but well made with many good points.
This movie shares many similarities with "Good Will Hunting"; let's face it: the same director (Gus Van Sant) and basically the same story, but instead of a problematic mathematical prodigy we have an apathetic literary prodigy, although not as apathetic when playing basketball, and instead of Robbie Williams as a mentor / psychologist , we have Sean Connery as an improbable mentor / writing teacher. At the end of the film, I think Van Sant even scorns the situation, as we have a brief appearance by Matt Damon (lead actor on "Good Will Hunting") only to report that Forrester died. This movie is also tedious and boring. A drama that fulfills the goals of inspirational film to some viewers, but in my cynical assessment it did not inspire me so much to the point of giving it more than 4/10.If you want to watch this bore be my guest, but on the same topic of "kids' school drama about growing up", you'll be a whole lot better served with "Dead Poets Society". That's my suggestion. Now that one is a true masterpiece.
Because of scoring exceptionally high on a statewide standardized exam and being an exceptionally good basketball player Jamal Wallace is sent to a prestigious prep school in Manhattan. He soon befriends the reclusive writer, William Forrester. The friendship leads William to overcome his reclusiveness and for Jamal to overcome the racial prejudices and pursue his true dream - writing. Finding Forrester is a 2000 Drama starring Sean Connery, Rob Brown, F. Murray Abraham, Anna Paquin and Michael Pitt and the film was directed by Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting). What i really liked about this film was the relationship between Jamal and William they had some sort of father and son relationship or whatever you wanna call it but both Brown and Connery are really great in this film and they have a pretty good chemistry plus i liked Abraham as Prof. Robert Crawford he was kinda of the main 'villain' of the Story because he didn't believe Jamal and he didn't believe that he would have a future besides Basketball of course Paquin is also really good. Overall i don't think that there's much more to say it was just a really good Drama with the main actors being really good in their roles and Gus Van Sant just knows how to direct a well made and well directed Drama plus Sean Connery is good in anything he stars.
Finding ForresterFinding Forrester was a great movie in my opinion. It had every quality that a good movie should, suspenseful scenes, dramatic twists, and a great plot. Starting the movie off, we are shown Jamal, a troubled teen with a passion for basketball. As soon as his dad left the picture, he develops a love for writing which is shown throughout the movie. Jamal begins each day with shooting hoops with his friends, this continues for a while until they notice a strange occurrence at the top of an apartment complex close by. A mysterious man stares out of the window using binoculars to watch life play out. Jamal is then dared to climb up into this man's house and retrieve something that he would then bring back. Jamal finds his way into the house, looks around and picks up a strange knife which he then puts in his bag and begins to exit. Although the man was not asleep and noticed Jamal. Frightened, Jamal bustles out of the house only to later realize he had left his school bag in a fluster. He continues life only to later see a delivery take place for the man in the apartment. Jamal stops this man and carries out a conversation on the question of why he locks his car. Jamal questioned if it was due to his race, yet this is refuted. Jamal then showcases his impressive knowledge of BMW history to this man and then lets him go. Starting to walk back, Jamal is interrupted from a package of his own, his school bag which fell out of the window as if someone had dropped it. Jamal continues home and soon realizes that the man had gone through his notebooks and revised them. Average school work is not appealing to Jamal but his score on a test has caught the attention of colleges nearby. Mailor, a private institute had looked over Jamal's test scores and decided that he was intelligent enough to attend. Jamal is accepted on a free scholarship and allowed to play basketball for the school, although it may not be as enjoyable as it may seem. The strange occurrence perplexes Jamal, and he journeys to the top of the complex. Jamal knocks on the door but the man is not welcoming of Jamal, but Jamal has questions. Jamal is not allowed to enter his house right away, but the man is soon to forgive as he begins to see a skill in him. The man revises Jamal's papers and swears to never talk to anyone about it, but it strikes Jamal as to why he would help him. Jamal begins asking questions only to be countered with some of the mans questions which Jamal does not see as kind. They begin to argue, as Jamal realizes this man's identity, he is William Forrester. The first day at Mailor, Jamal is appointed an escort who is soon befriended. His career in basketball has made a turn for the worse when Jamal is confronted by the other players. They argue and challenge each other as if it was territorial. Being the new kid, Jamal is given a hard time but they eventually learn tolerate each other.Mr Forrester's desperation to not be noticed by the outside world has given Jamal the inspiration to take him out to a ball game. They enter the mass of people inside the gates, and are instantly parted. Jamal eventually locates him and they return home. Mr Forrester actually enjoyed the night. Jamals essays are getting better and better with the help of his mentor, but the essay competition is wrapping up and he needs a paper. He decides to take a paper from the apartment, breaking the promise that they had made. Jamal turns it in only to be told that the title was used in an article by William Forrester, his mentor. He is disqualified from the competition and is only able to stay on the basketball team because of his skill. Furious, Jamal returns to WIlliam with the news and they argue. Jamal's big game is that same night in which the victory relies only on his free shots. Flustered about the days events, he misses both shots. The next day at school is the competition. William makes a surprise appearance, reading Jamal's essay. Astounded, Mr Crawford lectures the class on how they should be inspired only to hear that these words are Jamals. The board and Mr Crawford argue on if he should be qualified but Crawford's decision ultimately does not matter. He is allowed to continue school and basketball. William Forrester decided to return to his home country, only later to die of cancer. This news reaches Jamal and then i had to go to the band hall for a pep rally. The linear progression of Jamal being announced the hero of the story to William being his mentor "trapped inside of the tower" who Jamal saves is great. The director chose Jamal to be the hero because he is relatable while Forrester is a very seasoned, and skilled author. Overall I believe this film is a great choice for anyone, willing to sit through no action of course.
Finding forrester is a solid 8/10 stars. Because no movie is perfect, even though this film comes close. The story begins with a kid rapping to set the scene in the greater bronx area. With a student/ protagonist named jamal. Jamal is a competition grade writer but refuses to show this to his mentors. Until his test scores come back and he is sent to a private school with a teacher that does not trust him. Jamal then sneaks into a flat to see the (window man). In which he Gets spotted and leaves his bag. He later received his bag back only to find all his journals with notes scattered throughout. this man in the window was william forrester we later find out. A man who wrote one of the greater novels of all time. Jamal then slowly starts to gain foresters trust to help him learn his true potential in writing. Where forrester keeps giving lessons and jamal gets greater and greater. So when he writes his big paper and steals the title of one of forrester's previous works, jamal finds himself about to be kicked out of the private school even though he wrote that paper. Even with that they don't let it go. the school later decides to make a deal with jamal saying if he helps them win state for basketball they will let it slide. To which he fails. Later on he quits basketball to focus on writing and many colleges are looking to give him scholarships. Overall i think you will like this movie if u are into with hero/ mentor movies along with writers. Or just about anyone. I would recommend this movie.
