Good story, Not enough for a whole film
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
The movie is made so realistic it has a lot of that WoW feeling at the right moments and never tooo over the top. the suspense is done so well and the emotion is felt. Very well put together with the music and all.
An undistinguished action vehicle for Chuck Norris, this time playing a maverick cop (a real stretch for him) who has to battle a street war between rival drug dealers. What his movie lacks in an original plot it makes up for with an intelligent script which somewhat surprisingly focuses on characterisation instead of macho one-liners, and good pacing and direction from Andrew Davis, here cutting his teeth on the genre which would later serve him well in the likes of UNDER SIEGE.Norris plays the typical tough-yet-likable hardman character he always seems to play, except that he's less reliant on the martial arts here. The physical fights that do ensue are generally unexciting and limp, the shoot-outs and gun battles more convincingly portrayed. Henry Silva (NICO: ABOVE THE LAW) is the chief villain, and is very good as per usual; there aren't many actors who manage to look as genuinely evil as Silva - except Christopher Walken perhaps. Dennis Farina appears in a minor role as a buddy of Norris, and the supporting cast are rounded out by passable actors and actresses who put in solid, if unmemorable, performances. The movie draws in drug dealing and battles between rival gangs with a subplot involving police corruption, specifically an officer who accidentally shoots an innocent bystander. The various plot strands are woven together well, and there are a couple of set-pieces (like Norris taking on an entire bar) which certainly don't disappoint. The violent ending is predictable and pretty clichéd, but executed with a certain style. This is routine but solid stuff from Norris.
In the early 1980s, before Chuck Norris signed a multi-movie deal with Cannon Pictures that slowly reduced him to box office poison status with an almost uninterrupted string of bad movies, Norris did a two movie deal with Orion Pictures that resulted in two of his best movies, "Lone Wolf McQuade" and this movie. It isn't a perfect movie - the movie's villain (played by Henry Silva) doesn't get enough time to properly develop him into a real strong character, Norris' performance is often more monotone than not, and surprisingly there isn't a lot of martial arts action. Still, the movie works. Unlike many other '80s action movies, there is a human element at work here, making you care about the characters that deserve it. There are also some pretty good action sequences, with some strong visuals thrown in. And while Norris may be monotone when he delivers his lines, he does bring in a certain presence, one that shows toughness as well as compassion in his character. Norris hit his peak here - it was all downhill from then on until the TV show "Walker, Texas Ranger" revitalized his career.
One of Chuck Norris' best movies, this is. It's a role that is absolutely perfect for him. He's a rock solid, super tough, good to the bone police detective who isn't afraid to resolve the situations all on his own if nobody will help him. I tell you, the last scene is so hardcore Chuck Norris action that you'll love it if you like action. There's just something great about one guy annihilating lots of scumbags on his own. Especially when it's either Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone doing it. It's Chicago in the 80's, a great backdrop for this kind of movie. Superb action and the man himself make this a must watch for action afficionados.
And a sentimental favorite of mine because I love movies shot in my hometown, Chicago.Norris was never better than he is in this film, which would easily work with another lead. It's that good. It's not a schlock action hero vehicle for a non-actor champion of a physical sport. It moves at a terrific pace. There's not a wasted shot, and it uses its local cast and locations well in setting the mood and telling the story. It's about a drug bust gone bad and the war between rival mobsters that results. Norris is the undercover cop who singlehandedly ends the war and brings the bad guys down.Look for John Mahoney in an early film role (okay, a bit part) and a great fight sequence atop a moving El train. No kidding. this is a terrific action film.
