A lot more amusing than I thought it would be.
There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
I don't know what's wrong with Bruce Willis. He seems to be starring in more and more of these 'straight to DVD' films these days. I can't see him needing the money while he's still making Die Hard films, so why does he do it? Here, like so many other (non cinema) films, he puts his face on the front cover of the DVD box and various promotional material to lure people like me into thinking he's in it for more than a few minutes. In truth, his part is little more than an extended cameo. The film is about a school that is entirely populated by stereotypes. The nerdy boy likes the hot girl. There are arrogant jocks and a host of other clichés. Then, when some test papers are stolen, the hot girl wants the nerdy boy to investigate for the school newspaper. So follows a sort of 'detective story' only with no actual detectives and in a school instead of a seedy criminal underworld. Plus the lead character narrates constantly. If he walks into a gym, he tells you he's going to walk into a gym then goes on to list every person taking part in a physical activity inside. Seriously, it was like watching a film with the director's commentary on! I was watching this film and it's never a good sign when you start wondering how long it's been on for. I guessed 45 minutes. I checked on the DVD timer and found I'd only watched 15 minutes. I'm afraid I couldn't last any more than 30 minutes of this.Maybe it got better after that and, if I did myself and the film a disservice, I apologise. But the opening half an hour was so dull, full of clichés and over-narration, I just couldn't bring myself to watch it any more.
It is not a teenager movie like another reviewer said. Not in my opinion. And also this "perverted" I did not see it at all. I personally found this movie just, entertaining. It is not wonderful, and somehow there are not kept promises. But it was a bit funny, a bit sexy, a bit intriguing. You want to follow the movie and see what this little assh....e of the main character can do next. And well, yes, it is full of teens and teens are teens, with all what beautiful and annoying there is int that. And even with some weak points, this movie can be entertaining for many people.
Assassination of a High School President is an ambitious independent film that tells a terrific story. It is also Directed by a first timer, who really wasn't sure what direction the film should take. Touching on many genres, it manages to succeed adequately at all of them, but gives us little more than the great story it started out with. Bobby Funke (Reece Thompson) is the male answer to Veronica Mars, but he's not a detective, he works for the paper, or at least he wants to. Out of nowhere the biggest story in school history manages to fall into his lap and the introverted Funke, quickly gains popularity in revealing who stole the S.A.T.'s. Funke soon comes to question his initial accusation and digs deeper to uncover a conspiracy that could rock his small Catholic school to it's core. I'd never seen Reece Thompson in anything before, but he does a tremendous job at playing up all the right angles. From a bullied Sophomore to a school hero and even a man on a mission, Thompson cuts through it all with ease to give an amazing performance. He's paired with Mischa Barton, who is off the charts hot and tries to distract Bobby with everything he's wanted since the third grade. Bruce Willis adds to the already talented cast, by playing a hysterical principal who suffers from P.T.S.D., and runs his school like an army base. While the film isn't quite a comedy or a drama, it features a lot of both, while telling us a really well thought out story. The talented cast and the even more talented writers, more than make up for the Directors inexperience and really make this film a winner. Going into this movie, I had a feeling it was just going to be another awful High School comedy, but it really is so much more than that. The ending puts it all over the top and will just blow your mind. The Assassination of a High School President is very reminiscent of the show, Veronica Mars, except that it's a bit more edgy and maybe that's what it needed to survive. Bobby Funke lives the dream of every bullied student and teaches us something about the way teenagers think at the same time. It's an interesting film that certainly has it's ups and downs, but in the end, the good most certainly outweighs the bad.
Refreshingly Noir, thats what I think of when I watch this movie. Its a good old school conspiracy theory mystery with only one man who can see past the smoke screen that the conspirator/s throw in front of everyones faces. I love the fact that its done in a spoof way taking elements like making the backdrop a high school, turning characters into classic Noir characters, eg. the principal = mayor. And the fact that the actors push their lines too much making it overly dramatize fueling the parody of it all; which makes it all so very humorous. Also, like most mystery movies, you continuously second guess who did the crime because the movie makes twists and turns that put you to the edge of the seat until just before it all wraps up, you figure out the true person/s behind it all and watch as the past hour of questions and back stepping all unravel in front of you into the perfect crime. Over all, this is a movie to see; its spoofs Film Noir but also praises it with the execution of the acting, the script, and even the camera work giving you those angles that make any movie way more eerier. Straight to DVD cant stop this movie, its truly a mystery to see, refreshingly Noir. Now all we need is for a real Film Noir movie to come around soon.
