Fantastic!
Excellent but underrated film
A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
One summer, four orphans boys who have grown to be the closest of friends find themselves competing for the attention of the same family. With no emotional charge being delivered properly, the acting to be somewhat of a mess and the characters alongside the storyline very boring and messy 'December Boys' wastes both Teresa Palmer and Daniel Radcliffe but also the time and money of it's viewers who somehow found this movie and gave it a shot without knowing what it was truly about. The cast truly deserved better than this messy drama. (0/10)
If anyone remember "Summer of '42", "December Boys" is close to it. In this movie, you got 4 orphans: Maps (Daniel Radcliffe, "Harry Potter"), Misty (Lee Cormie),Spark (Christian Byers),& Spit (James Fraser). When they have a birthday on the same month, they get the chance to leave the orphanage and head out to the beach. Out there, they stay with a couple, whose wife is stricken with cancer. They later meet a couple who does stunts at a carnival. The younger three associated themselves with the couple, while Maps associated with Lucy(Teresa Palmer). Maps and Lucy spends so much time together, they share a kiss, and gets deflowered in the process. Earlier, Misty learns one of the four will be adopted. When Maps went to speak to Fearless(Sullivan Stapleton), he learns that he's not the motorcycle rider, he is only cleaning up after the animals. He would later learn that Fearless was a rider. An stunt accident caused his wife not to bear children. After a near drowning experience, the four orphans are re-bonded and learn to know that Misty is the one who gets adopted. He declined the offer and chooses the other three. Of course, years later, the surviving three come to the place where they had their holiday. And reminisce the good times. This movie is close to "Summer of '42". And it suited me just fine! 5 stars!
A great movie indeed with all that a good movie needs: love, drama, realistic characters, joy, sadness and all the other things that a human being might feel nostalgic about at a certain moment. The orphans change the cove and cove changes them forever and, if you let it, their story might change you as well. The emotional charge simply grows bigger and bigger from the beginning of the movie towards the end thus providing with a finale of biblical proportions (emotionally speaking).Although in the beginning it might not seem like much this is, in my opinion, a movie that will not leave you unchanged and give you a new perspective as to what your dreams are and/or ought to be.
To Jlin from the Emerald Isle .. methinks you had a little too much of the Hard Stuff ;-)Whats it like to be an Orphan in the days of narrow mindedness and strange moral beliefs that were taught then ... this film portrays this well.Excellent Cinema Photography and composition with some excellent stills and excellent script too with some pot shots at the ridiculous order that Nuns were and are today :( with their strange methods at handling Orphans not to mention their narrow minded beliefs. The acting by the 4 orphan boys was very convincing as was the portrayal of how young boys behave like smoking after lights out in bed, or how the awareness of the opposite sex awakened their senses. The orphans were the stars without a doubt the other adults competent enough Jack Thomson was somewhat wooden in his role.To sum up an enjoyable film devoid of any nasties ... not a masterpiece by any means though.
