This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.

One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.

Worth seeing just to witness how winsome it is.

It's the mid 90's in a small town. Zach and Josh are best friends. They hang out with new friends Daryl and Charlie. Daryl and Zach convinces Josh to go into his brother's room while he's away with the Marines. The boys find a samurai sword and a bag of weed. As the four boys play around with the sword, Josh gets into a fight with Daryl who stole his brother's weed. The fight ends with Josh accidentally killing Daryl with the sword. They hide the body but soon paranoia drive them apart. Zach is haunted by the incident and starts to suspect Josh has turned dark.I like the darkness. The guys are more or less regular kids. Charlie Tahan has a great disturbed sensibility. Owen Campbell is fine but it would be better to be less flustered. His deteriorating mental state actually decreases the overall tension. He's ahead of me on his assumption. It's more tense to be the other way around. Also, I'm not sure why the boy would attack the girls. Sure, Whitcomb is understandable but what happened in that bedroom. I was actually expecting a paranoia about going to the cops. This one requires more attention to building the tension and suspense.

For those who give this film a low rating (regardless of your film background) lack basic psychological background. I am no cinematic expert, but I do know my way around psychology to know that this film puts Split to shame. Super Dark Times beautifully illustrates the "worst case" but very realistic scenario after a traumatic experience during that psychological development of shifting between logic based on rules vs. logic based on ethics and morality. Although we get the typical teenage coming of age flick, we also see the darker side... the sinister side... the realistic side that can turn that typical teenage coming of age flick into a whirlwind of tragedy. It's every teenage slasher horror film you could've dreamed of highlighted with the themes of your favorite true crime series like Forensic Files and Child Killers. Super Dark Times isn't here to please you with prissy teen scripts doused with romance and sex... it's here to prove that an average life can be tainted with a taste of something dark and unforgiving.

Zach and Josh are best friends for a long time, but one event has changed it all. Josh accidentally killed one of their friend. together with another kid, they keep it hushed and cover their tracks. little that they know, what comes after that is more terrifying.there are three types of people dealing with this current situation that they are struggling to live with. one of them is really mature and careful about it, the other is trying hard to conceal it even though it showed from his expression and gesture, and the last one really lose it and fall to a pit hole of super darkness state. maybe the title suggested Josh's state. and everything about the film is quite good on the details. Zach can't have a normal relationship with his dream girl anymore even when she actually has opened herself to him. Josh acting very weird and completely not himself, and the other boy is very careful. life will never be the same again for the three of them. there's also a good friendship drama and also shockingly heartpounding sequence that i can't reveal in this review.i just feel that they go on a little bit soft on the friendship drama. there are some dialogue that is not that necessary. and something about the fact that the boy that Josh was accidentally killed is poor and Josh is a middle class citizen, something could be explored more. but overall, it is a good film that has a potential to be a great film.

I won't say much about this movie other than how amazing it is. Both story wise and technically, this is beautiful. The editing is on point, the cinematography is perfect, the acting is excellent. Now down to the story. It's simple, effective, dark, and most importantly, it doesn't sacrifice any quality to get a scene out there. It's very similar to mean creek in a basic sense while going above that to show how darkness can build up after a terrible event while the characters are just trying to get through a strange time in their lives. The only thing that might through people off might be some of the characters, they don't seem like the best people at times or they can seem kind of annoying but I believe that helps to make it real. If you make everyone perfect, it won't be believable. I fell in love with this movie and I believe others will too.
