This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.

Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.

Shrooms starts out as a promising low-budget horror with an interesting slant: a group led out into the Irish woods in search of hallucinogenic mushrooms (AKA 'shrooms'). However, following this decent first act everything soon descends into tedium, a state that, sadly, lasts for the rest of the film. Hence, from the time that Tara takes the wrong mushroom the film just becomes an interminable series of dream sequences, jump scares and a plethora of those annoying jerky edits that were all the rage in the mid-noughties to convey supernatural ghostly forms and creatures. As such, the film shifts from a bunch of bickering characters 'round the campfire to showing the same characters running around the woods, barns, a lake, and an old abandoned juvenile offenders house that was the scene of dread and violent acts (and the apparent source of the annoyingly jerky moving ghosts that punctuate the film). Of the characters, the young women start out as friends, but they mysteriously act like they are all mortal enemies as soon as they hit camp, while the males are split between the zen-like guide who knows the ways of the shrooms, an obligatory jock, a would-be Karate Kid, and a couple of ostensibly menacing Deliverance-style wood-dwelling yokels. There are various murders, with some gore (but nothing extravagant), and there is an apparent twist ending. However, of said twist, if you were listening to Jake's very detailed and curiously precise list of what happens if you imbibe the forbidden black-topped mushroom, then the conclusion is absolutely no surprise at all, and is thus very disappointing if you were expecting supernatural hi-jinks. In sum, I find films that are laced with dream-sequences to be a bit of a bore (although to be fair, since this one deals in psilocybin mushrooms then I guess such things are par for the course - but that does not make them any less tiresome). However, the final scene of the film, with a bloodied Tara, hands and face pressed against the glass of the back window of an ambulance for a very long time, is somewhat amusing. In fact, the scene is so protracted that you can almost see in the actor's eyes that she is thinking, "I've been madly staring out of this window for ages, when is the director going to shout "Cut?" Or did I miss that?" "Please shout "Cut!" as I feel really daft madly staring out of this window in my lame twist ending that is not a twist at all if you were listening to Jake's very detailed and curiously precise list of what happens if you imbibe the forbidden black-topped mushroom!"). Nevertheless, in the film's defence, Shrooms does have a talking cow, so that is something.

Five American friends travel to Ireland for recreational drug use in the out of the way woods. Tara (Haun) is interested in reconnecting with Jake (Hutson) the local who is serving as the guide of the adventure. Jake tells the group they will be hallucinating while taking shrooms, and warns the group to stay away from a certain kind or certain death is assured. Jake tells of ancient druids who took the forbidden shrooms would gain entrance to another dimension if they survived. Tara has of course, already eaten one and soon there is a terrible killer stalking and killing our drugged out characters. Is it the hallucinations or is this slaughter really happening? This clever idea of alternate states allows this movie to get away with what is basically a stalk and kill movie underneath. There is definitely some fun to be had with this one, as the kills are pretty graphic and the imagery flashes with shocks. There is a big twist at the end that some may or may not see coming. Some good tension is built up and the movie works on a certain level delivering some solid scares along the way.

I was intrigued after reading the back of the DVD for Shrooms as I have experience with many psychedelics including LSD, Psilocybin Mushrooms and DMT. I was curious to see if this drug-infused slasher flick would let me revisit my previous hallucinatory experiences or would it simply be another "Reefer-Madness"-esque gorefest. Sadly the latter was correct. The film follows the standard formula for a teen slasher film. We are introduced to a group of American college students, including but not limited to: The steroid-fuelled jock; the hot girl(s); the stoner; the handsome, intelligent guy and last but not least; the heroine of the story. And yes, they are picked off in that order. The group travel to Ireland to see the beauty of the Irish hills and forests but primary to take "Shrooms" (Psilocybin or magic mushrooms). After a night of camping and hearing tales of how the woods are haunted by murderous spirits, the group awaken to find that the jock has gone missing. So, naturally, the best solution is to take a load of shrooms and go into the woods looking for him. As the trip kicks in, the group become separated and are gradually picked off one by one by the strange, evil spirits in the forest. Are these evil spirits real or are they just part of the trip? That's this film's lure and unfortunately it doesn't draw the audience in all that well. The problem with "Shrooms" is that apart from the hallucination angle, it doesn't have anything special that separates it from other slasher films. Anyone who has seen any of the Friday the 13ths knows exactly what's going to happen in this film. Hell, anyone who's seen any of the Wrong Turn films knows exactly what's going to happen here. The character's are so cardboard that it's impossible to warm to any of them. I felt no fear or adrenaline watching or anticipating them being slaughtered. The fact that they are tripping throughout the whole escapade doesn't even add much to the development of the film. It seems that the shrooms only effect is to confuse and disorientate the individual before they're slaughtered. If the film was less of a slasher and more of a psychological thriller it would have been much more entertaining. If the film focused on the psychological and hallucinatory effects of the shrooms rather than simply hack 'n' slash then I would have been much more satisfied. Unfortunately this is just another run- of-the-mill slasher flick that will long be forgotten of.To conclude, I really cannot see anything positive in Shrooms. It's bland, boring and laughable. The film was clearly written by someone who has no experience with magic mushrooms, only what they learned in school (I.e "drugs are bad m'kay, you'll lose your mind!"). I'm annoyed that I wasted two hours of my life watching this when I could have watched something much more entertaining, or better yet I could have gone shrooming!

after the tripping began i hated every second of this movie. why is that? let me start with the story. its a typical teenager in the wood getting high and murdered story, with all the clichés that follows. the idea this time is that they are tripping on mushrooms, with isn't that bad an idea, but oh boy they messed it up big time. basically the story makes no sense and i had a really hard time figuring out what was happening. all the quick shifting from one location to another, and reality too dream/trip makes you confused, you cant tell what is happening. the shots are also made really badly, and you really don't see that much to the monsters (this time monks), other then a few seconds each time they appear. most you see of them is somebody walking around in a robe. i think they didn't have too much money for the effects. in all the surreal and fast edited scenes i stumbled across something weird, that i would like to point out. the one dude was killed in an old car, by a monk giving him a blow job? the writers must have been tripping. seeing how little effort and heart there is put into this s**t, it hurt me watching the nordisk film (danish film studio) logo in the beginning. when they use their money on crap like this, i don't wonder why danish film industry is in crisis. i would also complain, that i had a really hard time understanding what they where saying, especially the one character with an Irish accent, and the two hillbillies talking Irish. its okay they talk Irish, but put at least some subtitles on. or else it ruins the movie for the not Irish talking audience (the majority of the world population). but i have at least one positive thing to say about it. the settings in the woods and the light, gives it a dark atmosphere. combined with the mushrooms, there is some potential, but sadly not this time. so to conclude, i will say 1/10, because it is one of the worst made movies i have ever seen. and i will recommend potential audience to stay away from it, because you don't get anything other than annoyed, when watching it, especially if you want to see a horror movie or get scared.
