Excellent but underrated film
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
Story: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
I don't often read reviews before watching movies so I had no idea this would be such a forgettable movie. I expected a Ring series movie to be better, but this is a pure b-movie.I don't know what the story behind making this movie is, but converting a story based on VHS era to an era where tapes are long gone and videos play a totally different role, you just shoot a video and share it, you don't even have to think of files anymore. That must have been a bit of a challenge - and an opportunity - but that part is very briefly handled, maybe deliberately. We also know the Samara story already, What's left is a very mediocre story which has some ideas, but never goes very deep into anything.Everything is quite small scale, very few actors - who do an ok job, but feels like a tv series episode. And it's not really scary at all. Not downright bad, just forgettable.
Am I the only person who was really disappointed in the ending of this movie? I didn't really expect much from the movie; I was a fan of the first one, sat through the second and happened to catch this one because it was on Hulu. The movie wasn't great, I don't even know if I can say that it was good but it got me through a couple of hours on a slow day which is all I was looking for. That being said, about two minutes before the movie ended I was feeling pleasantly surprised because it appeared that I was getting something I didn't even know I wanted: a sense of closure for Samara. The mythology surrounding the character is shaky at best but she's always had some pretty simple motivations. In the first movie she just wanted to be heard. The second (which I admittedly don't remember very well), she wanted a mother. In this movie, she just apparently just wanted some peace. For someone to care enough about her to finally put her to rest properly. Then the next two minutes of the movie happened and all I was left with was a big WTF. Now that
I'm a fan of ghost mysteries so it worked for me to a degree. The movie is hampered by the fact that the producers couldn't decide what type of movie it was to be - the beginning has more in common with Final Destination (aircraft scene) which seems brutally hammered on to the rest of the movie. Then we cut to a stab at some basic Ring stuff, you see the movie, seven days later... etc. Then we quickly leave the professor behind (the synopsis will have you believe that this production is about his 'experiment' when it is irrelevant to the plot). Then the actual movie begins, or the third stab at it anyways - a young couple go in search of the mystery behind the girl's visions, which is also a search for Samara and her origins. It bothered some that the mother is part of this but if you treat this as a standalone movie (after the muddled start) then it works - provided you like ghost/supernatural mysteries. They would have been better off dropping the tenuous link to The Ring and pressing on with an independent story in which we could see more of Vincent D'Onofrio, who was superb in this as the blind preacher (no surprise), and play that theme to the full.
I watch movie like almost a year ago and I have a good time. I brought It on DVD and I put my movie ticket inside the movie case. The story is not bad, the characters in interesting, the acting is not that bad, and the script is not strong but still I enjoy this movie. It's WAY better than The Bye Bye Man and The Ring Two (2005). Yes I know this movie is been in Development Hell for 12 years but look at Jeepers Creepers 3 (2017), I tried to get into that movie but it's not interesting. I know people will disagree with me but that's what I thought about the movie.
