Ride Along

For the past two years, high-school security guard Ben has been trying to show decorated APD detective James that he's more than just a video-game junkie who's unworthy of James' sister, Angela. When Ben finally gets accepted into the academy, he thinks he's earned the seasoned policeman's respect and asks for his blessing to marry Angela. Knowing that a ride along will demonstrate if Ben has what it takes to take care of his sister, James invites him on a shift designed to scare the hell out of the trainee. But when the wild night leads them to the most notorious criminal in the city, James will find that his new partner's rapid-fire mouth is just as dangerous as the bullets speeding at it.

Plot; Security guard Ben must prove himself to his girlfriend's brother, top police officer James. He rides along James on a 24-hour patrol of Atlanta. This is one of the top 5 worst buddy or buddy cop films ever made. Both Ice Cube and Kevin Hart have zero chemistry with each other, Cube looks like he is bored doing this and is only doing these films for the paycheck, Hart is annoying as hell trying to be a Chris Tucker wannabe and failing. The story is generic, uninteresting, and overall boring. The action is lackluster and unmemorable. The only positive thing I can say is Laurence Fishburne who actually tries to give a performance unlike everyone else in this film. This is easily one of the worst buddy or buddy cop films ever made, don't watch it if you haven't seen it, watch good ones like Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, Showdown in Little Tokyo, Bad Boys, Tango and Cash just to name a few.

Simply because they would not be interesting. "Ride Along" is an American 100-minute movie from 2 years ago directed by Tim Story and starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube as the main characters. The story is about a man who has a girlfriend, but does not really get along with her brother. The man himself is an officer, but already struggles with keeping a handful of students under control while his soon-to-be brother-in-law is a tough and very successful cop. The film is listed on IMDb with several genres, but I cannot take it seriously as anything other than an action comedy. The dramatic elements are there, but they get entirely destroyed by the ridiculous crime story in here. Of course, that would not be a problem if the film didn't take itself seriously from the crime genre perspective on some occasions. But it does and it is painful to watch. Action genre I don't care too much about, but I guess it was okay from that perspective. Now about the comedy, it was not all bad, there was one scene when they were talking about the phone in the police car and the woman just won't understand Hart's character's message to her. That was kinda funny I guess. But most of the other humor is not really that great. Or at least it is not sufficient in quality and quantity for a 100-minute film. Most of it relies on parallels between the two characters. We see one character be in a dangerous undercover mission early on, another plays a video game that is about police and crime. Or on another occasions, one questions a criminal, the other questions a child. Stuff like that. In general, a lot of the action are dialogs that take place between the two protagonists in the police car. I guess they did it to save a little money there, but it may have been too many scenes there. It got a bit repetitive, even if the funniest scene, the one I mentioned earlier, takes place there too. The film's biggest weakness is the script. And again 5 people or so were working on it, which is a complete mystery to me. They can't all be that bad. The fact that the entire thing was so predictable was far from the movie's biggest problem. It was just a failed attempt in most areas regardless what you think of, apart from being entirely unrealistic of course. And still, I guess the film was commercially successful enough to motivate everybody (including director, producers and lead actors) for a second movie as this one came out very recently. And surprise, surprise, it is even less successful in terms of critical reception than this very mediocre first. I honestly have no interest checking out the sequel anytime soon. This first film here occasionally reminded me of a weak version of some older cop movie starring Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte(?). Do not watch "Ride Along". Thumbs down.

Video game obsessed high school security guard Ben Barber (Kevin Hart) has ambitions on becoming a police officer. When he's accepted in the academy, his girlfriend's brother James Payton (Ice Cube) decides that Ben must partake in a 'Ride Along' with him in order to prove that he is worthy to marry his sister. James initially makes life hell for Ben and deliberately tries to discourage Ben from joining the force. However, when James finds himself in danger it's down to Ben to really show what he's made of....The opening credits for this film are shamelessly (and perhaps knowingly) over the top and ridiculous. The chase sequence at the start looks like it's come from Need For Speed or Burnout and in these sequences it feels like you're watching a mate playing a computer game. I'm sure it's no coincidence that the following scene shows Kevin Hart playing a video game. It's actually quite fun in a dumb way.Ride Along has two strands to its plot; you have the main plot which basically sees Payton attending various 126 situations (which are police codes that they use to wind up rookies). We then have a sub plot involving a Serbian gang that are attempting to buy fire arms. The main plot does provide us with some laughs, but I suspect that how funny you'll find this aspect of the plot will really depend on whether you find Kevin Hart funny or not. I'll admit that he was occasionally funny here, but when watching him I can't help feel that I'm watching a poor man's Chris Tucker (no matter how much I try to shake this thought). I did find that he also got a bit annoying at times. The main plot does start to become a little repetitive and tiresome towards the end, but there are just about enough laughs here to make it tolerable. The sub plot involving the Serbians seems to merely act as a back drop for the majority of the running time till towards the end when the writers decide that it's time to wrap the film up. In some ways it didn't bother me as the sub plot is never as strong as the main plot. One thing that needs to exist in order for these cop-buddy films to work is chemistry between the two leads and to my surprise the chemistry between Ice Cube and Kevin Hart was actually pretty good. Ice Cube is not the greatest of actors, but the writers play to his basic strengths by giving him the tough talking 'straight man' role. Likewise, Hart is the crazy one and again the writers play to his strengths by giving him the 'Chris Tucker' type role - sorry I've made the analogy again. Despite some of the annoyances, Ice Cube and Hart do make this film watchable and do make a winning combo. Laurence Fishburne arrives late in the game as the villain of the piece giving Ride Along that little bit extra class.Ride Along is an OK film and is perfectly watchable (albeit Hart does get a little annoying from time to time). However it is just an OK film and is far from the best that the genre has to offer.

West: Ride Along 4/10- I was surprised when I saw the low reviews for this movie. Yes, it does not have the best plot and the buddy cop film genre has certainly been exhausted over the past few years, but it is hard not to like it. It is a comedy and I challenge someone not to laugh when you see this movie. This movie made a brilliant choice of having Kevin Hart, who plays Ben Barber, be a war video game fanatic who thinks because he is so good at Call of Duty that he is ready for the real thing. Then comes Ice Cube, he plays almost nearly the exact same role he did in 21 Jump Street, but this role works for him and he was funny enough for the film. The rest of the cast does there job. The only thing that really caught my attention as far as the cast goes was the surprising appearance of Laurence Fishburne who delivered a below average performance to be honest. In his defense, I believe that his role was casted poorly. The plot was awful to be honest but it is a comedy so no one was looking for an Oscar for this film. A lot of the things that they did in this movie seemed unrealistic but funny nonetheless. This movie though did not have consistent laughs all through out and I would be lying if it did not have more than a couple hit and misses. Still, the short bursts of die hard funny laughs made up for the rest. The action in this movie was obviously secondary to the comedy, but the explosions were still pretty cool. The only thing worth noting that no other movie other than Kick-ass has seemed to touch on that was very original was incorporating Call of Duty with real life situations. Those scenes were probably the funniest because I think the writers actually decided to try for a few scenes. This movie is more made for the younger generation, but I still think this is the best comedy out right now. If all you want is enjoyment and a few laughs, Ride Along won't be a bad choice.
