Good Kill

In the shadowy world of drone warfare, combat unfolds like a video game–only with real lives at stake. After six tours of duty, Air Force pilot Tom Egan now fights the Taliban from an air-conditioned bunker in the Nevada desert. But as he yearns to get back in the cockpit of a real plane and becomes increasingly troubled by the collateral damage he causes each time he pushes a button, Egan’s nerves—and his relationship with his wife—begin to unravel.

It too true, too realistic, too brutally honest, to Americans. Your brain will hurt, your American proud will be hurt. So no wonder it's only made some 300K$ at box office. LOL. As one of the solider said, we can kill faster than they make it, guess lots Americans think the same...well hope U.S.A understands, he is talking about genocide an entire race, well, which indeed can be an outcome of the vicious circle.

Ethan Hawk dwells in this movie right away. He is such an amazing actor, from my point of view, showing it here once again. He bleeds with emotions in each scene possible. The movie shows the ethics of war, the psychologial terror this people go through, while taking orders from the upper "floor". It shows the reality and the real number of times, people doubt and rethink their profession of killing others, taking innocents along the road. Again, as I feel about a lot of other movies, I think that the pace is a bit slow, but the point of the movie actually doesn't ask for a pacy movie at all, so I might be wrong.

Major Thomas Egan (Ethan Hawke) is a F-16 pilot married to Molly (January Jones) with two kids. He is currently flying drones and going home to his family. He would like to go back to flying F-16s but the Air Force is changing. He is disconnected from his wife. His commander Lt. Colonel Jack Johns (Bruce Greenwood) bemoans the lost of real flying and the recruiting of video game playing kids. They are put under the command of a CIA controller only as a voice over the phone. New airman Vera Suarez (Zoë Kravitz) starts questioning the ethics of the missions. The constant moral ambiguity drives Thomas into a decline. This is a movie about one moral ambiguity of war. It's not that subtle. Ethan Hawke delivers a solid performance. At the end of the day, he's killing people whether he's flying a drone or flying a fighter jet. The movie advocates against something that may not be agreeable to all audiences. It's not a great enough film to transcend that divide.

Director Andrew Niccol is one of the Best Unknowns working Today. His Films Gattaca (1997) and Lord of War (2005) are Excellent, Underseen, and Underrated. Here, He once Again Dives into highly Controversial Topics of the Day with No Easy Answers, just Disturbing Questions. The Escalating use of Drones by the U.S. in the War on Terror is the Subject that is addressed here through the Mind of a Fighter Pilot, now Assigned to a Joystick. He is Antsy, and Unable to Accept His "New" Place in the War. There are Pros and Cons about the Tactics and the Technology giving Balance that Keeps it from overt Anti-Drone Propaganda. The Film stays Grounded through the also Troubled Home-Life of Ethan Hawke's Air Ace with Tension midst the Relationship with Wife January Jones. Bruce Greenwood is Hawke's CO and adds a thread of Military Dedication and Patriotism to the Unraveling Tapestry of the Real Life situation.Overall, it is a Disturbing and Unfulfilling Movie because Nothing is Really Resolved in the ongoing and daily Routine of the 21st Century Chaos displayed Nightly on the News. What Makes it a bit Different is the Drone Strikes (in real life) are Never Dwelt upon or Detailed in the Media, Rarely getting More than a Mention. It's mostly Run by the Spooks at the CIA.This may be very Abstract to the Average Citizen in 2015, but one wonders just how real the Terror will become when Drones are Available at Wal Mart. We then might also be "Praying for Grey Skies".The Film is Thought Provoking and Topical and can't be ignored. It's a Film that by Nature is Not Really a War Movie, but it is Certainly about the new "War on Terror".
