This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadgerFirst off, I am a huge Johnny Knoxville fan. I find him hilarious and his films are great. Bad Grandpa is no exception. Bad Grandpa is hilarious, original, and has a few heartfelt moments. The acting is very good. Johnny Knoxville plays a very convincing old man who is hilarious and says some very outrageous things. Jackson Nicoll also performs very well. He has great comedic timing and, like Johnny Knoxville, is willing to say anything. The use of real people is another great aspect of the film. The pacing is fast but slows town towards the end. The runtime is just perfect. All of the jokes are funny and the stunts are all real.Pros: Hilarious story, good acting by Johnny Knoxville and Jackson Nicoll, great use of real people, fast pacing, a good runtime, and all of the jokes and stunts were funnyCons: Some slow pacing towards the endOverall Rating: 8.2

Not to be confused with the similarly titled Robert De Niro vehicle 'Dirty Grandpa', this earlier comedy starring Johnny Knoxville could be dubbed "Dirtier Grandpa" with gags that are cruder and push barriers even further. The plot revolves around an old man reluctantly taking his grandson on a road trip to meet his estranged father, gradually bonding with him along the way. Simplistic as this may sound, it is admirable that the filmmakers were actually able to create a cohesive narrative here given that the film involves unsuspecting individuals being pranked by the film crew a la 'Borat' and 'Brüno'. Not only that, they are often pranked in quite dangerous ways, with Knoxville forced through a glass window at one point! For a film involving grandfather and grandson though, the film derives a few too many laughs from just the old man for its own good. It is quite telling that the film's absolute best scene involves a child beauty pageant that they crash late in the piece, with the fact that they are both 'in on it' together rendering it such a memorable sequence of events. Knoxville is, however, skilled enough to carry the film in his moments without his youthful co-star, and Oscar nominated makeup or not, his portrayal of a man more than twice his actual age is nothing short of remarkable. This is also one of those rare movies that is worth sitting through the whole end credits for; not only do we get to see Knoxville pre and post makeup, we also get to see the reactions of those pranked after finding out that they are in a candid camera type film.

Hollywood has given us movies about Bad Boys, Bad Lieutenants, Bad Santas, Bad Teachers and even an individual Bad man (with a Good man and an Ugly man thrown in for good measure). All the movies I just referenced turned a profit – and they represent just the tip of the "Bad" iceberg. I guess Bad can be pretty good, at least for a movie studio's bottom line. So it should come as no surprise that Tinseltown chose to give us a film about a subpar patriarch. "Bad Grandpa" (R, 1:32) is, in a sense, a spin off of a spin off (or, you could say, this "Grandpa" is a grand-SON, of sorts). After Johnny Knoxville and his band of merry masochists gained an audience torturing themselves (and each other) for your amusement in their 2000-2002 MTV show, "Jackass", they began making feature-length movies full of their dangerous stunts and gross-out gags. One of the characters they created in order to set up some of their jokes was an "old" man named Irving Zisman. When Knoxville and his writing partners figured out a way to make Zisman's antics into a feature film, a highly inappropriate grandfather figure was born."Bad Grandpa" is part "Jackass" and part "Borat". (Yes, I know that's not that second movie's complete title, but "Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" is too many words for me to completely write out in one of my reviews... Wait a minute. Crap.) As I already mentioned, this film is part of the evolution of the "Jackass" franchise, but it has two things that the films, videos and TV shows that preceded it do not – a plot, and actual humor. In this film, Irving (Knoxville, after three hours a day in the make-up chair) is an 86-year-old man whose wife dies and whose daughter is going to jail, forcing Irving to drive his 8-year-old grandson, Billy (Jackson Nicoll) from Nebraska to North Carolina so he can be cared for by his father, a man whose lifestyle looks destined to land him in the Big House someday too. On their road trip, Irving and Billy interact with ordinary people in some very extraordinary ways and get themselves into some pretty unusual (and hilarious) situations. That's where "Borat: Cultural Learnings…." comes in. Most of the people with which Irving and Billy interact are real people whose actions and reactions are captured on hidden camera, and who don't find out it's all a set-up until afterwards (and those who didn't later sign consent forms get their faces blurred out). Now, I won't say any more about the film's situations, set-ups and sight gags for two reasons: (1) If you've seen the trailer, you know many of the funniest bits already and I wouldn't want to deprive you of any more surprises. (2) If you haven't seen the trailer, you're in for a real treat. This is a VERY funny movie! The plot gives a necessary structure to the humor and the gags are rarely as disgusting, painful or cringe-inducing as in the previous incarnations of "Jackass". Now, we can debate the propriety of involving a child actor in some of this adult-oriented humor, but Movie Fans have enjoyed similar humor (sometimes involving children) in "Borat", "A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas", the "Vacation" movies and countless other comedies, many of which are revered to this day. No children were (physically) harmed in the making of this movie and I think that little Jackson Nicoll (who already had nine films under his belt) will survive the "trauma" of participating in this movie. Although a few of the gags fall flat, and parents may think that some of them went a bit too far, I found "Bad Grandpa" about as funny as the trailer led me to believe it would be (for a change) – and much more entertaining than Knoxville's earlier efforts. "B+"

A lot better than I thought. Not that I didn't think it was going to be simple fun, bur this movie kind of surprised me.I knew rather little about it, I pretty much only knew it was from the "Jackass-people". And so I guess I thought it would be more like Jackass. But this is a movie. It is actually made like a movie, with acting and stuff. And it really works. The goal of a movie like this is to be entertaining and to make the viewer laugh and cringe. And you know, it does just that! Some of the scenes are painful to watch, because it is filmed among real people. It's a funny and effective mix of a movie and hidden camera. It works. The kid is great! Johnny Knoxville is also good, the makeup is awesome, but the kid! Good job! Some of it might be staged and scripted, but you can normally see, with ease, if a reaction is real or not, and I think most of the reactions here are real.
