If you don't like this, we can't be friends.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
I started watching this movie thinking it was just a low-budget sci- fi movie, with mediocre special effects and a standard plot. The space dogfight wasn't particularly engaging, and even when the characters got stranded in the planet it seemed too much of a B movie. But as the movie progressed, and I got to spend time with the characters and see their development from enemies to friends, I just felt such an emotional connection to them that it made the movie for me. The scene where Jeriba dies is one of the most emotionally- powerful deaths I've seen on screen! Overall, the movie is really an heart-warming experience with a very good message about peace and friendship. It's truth that the third act does fall into some clunky territory, but it didn't ruin the movie for me. For what it had, the movie was really great, compensating the lack of budget with a great script, great performances and great direction. If you're looking for a sci-fi movie with a great message and a heart-warming story, and you don't mind for the special effects, this is the one for you!
Not worth watching, it's really a very poor rehash of a much better film (Hell in The Pacific), two intergalactic enemy's meet and become bosom buddies after being stranded on some remote God forsaken planet, (which just so happens to have oxygen and water). True to form of similar propaganda Hollywod war movies, the earthling prisoner displays the arrogant superiority bravado, threatening his captor from a no-win position. The script is very poorly written, the acting (if you can call it that) very poor and the story line is ever so boringly predictable. The alien make-up (mask) is ridiculous, but it's intelligence and personality are worthy of praise and perhaps a reflection of what Christianity is really all about. It learns English very fast, including a lot of abstract words, and it displays ab superior humanitarian/Christian attitude than the selfish ego-centric aggressive earthling(s). It's a story of a lot of the movies cliché's strung together: white vs black, aggression vs compassion, homo- vs hetero-sexuality, war and peace, co-operation vs defiance, the individual vs authority, man against nature and man/alien, survival, co- operation and honor. All this was done much much better in it's precursor, Hell in The Pacific.
I saw this movie way, way back then - in the "before" time. Before there were computer generated special effects that took over everything and anything about a sci-fi movie. When I watched it then, I really enjoyed it. Having just watched it again, I still enjoy it. It's a well done piece of sci-fi. In fact, it certainly has to rank among the better sci- fi movies of the 80's if only because it's so different from most, and much more thoughtful. Outer space movies tend to be be heavy on inter- stellar battles between space ships, and futuristic weapons - and usually it's at the expense of story. "Enemy Mine" limits those and focuses much more heavily on story line and character development and becomes much more satisfying as a result. The two leads are great. Dennis Quaid is the lead character, as Willis Davidge - he's a space fighter pilot who crash lands on a strange world after a battle and finds himself stranded with one of his opponents - a lizard-like Drac named Jeriba, played by Lou Gossett, Jr. Humans and Dracs have been at war with each other ever since humans started exploring the galaxy, and discovered the Dracs already there. Davidge and Jeriba are hostile to each other at first, seeking to capture and/or kill each other, but gradually they realize that to survive in this hostile environment, they're going to have to learn to co-operate, and eventually co-operation turns to friendship between them. You really couldn't ask for better performances than those given by Quaid and Gossett.Set in the late 21st century, the movie nevertheless alludes to older problems. You think of racism as you see human "scavengers" enslaving captured Dracs, and there are clear shades of the Cold War (this was the 80's, after all) in the idea of two resolutely opposed individuals trying to learn to get along with each other. "Enemy Mine" is sometimes sad, but almost always hopeful, as it demonstrates that even between the fiercest and most seemingly dissimilar of foes, there's usually not that much difference. Truly a must-see from the 80's. (7/10)
Enemy Mine is one of those many cheesy sci-fi films from the 1980's, but it still is a fun film to watch. The special effects do not hold up that well compared to today but the alien makeup is actually really good. One thing that annoyed me the most is the annoying trilling of the alien. I just wish he would speak normally without that trilling. This film is about two mortal enemies who are at war with each other but they both crash-land on a planet and there they must realize in order to survive, they must rely on each other and become friends. The two main leads by Dennis Quaid and Louis Gosset Jr hold their own in this movie. I really like Quaid's character since be brought substance into his character.Overall, this is a good sci-fi film with a good message hidden deep within. This follows Close Encounters as one of those good films with good meanings on alien communication. I rate this film 8/10.
