Too much of everything
How sad is this?
Boring
The acting in this movie is really good.
Be it Woody Allen or Rob Schneider, a comedy about an average Shmoe who tries his hand at becoming a top-notch gigolo was never going to be the subtlest of propositions to the viewer. To actor-writer-director John Turturro's credit, he actually pulls that part off quite well: His innocuous and laconic Fioravente is so far off the radar of female sex fiends such as Sharon Stone (yeah, she's still got it -- not bad for a 55 years old mum of three) that he just about manages to come off as mysteriously attractive. Allen himself is also pretty funny as Murray the pater familias of a black patchwork family, turned part-time mack.Enters former pop nymphette slash jailbait Vanessa Paradis as Avidal, an ultraorthodox Jewish widow from Williamsburg. Get this, she works as the nit (headlice) remover for Allen's children, and as such Allen hooks her up with the fella he's pimping. Better not think too long about that one. Anyways, they naturally fall in love (I mean Avidal and Fioravente, not Avidal and Murray) and we get the heaviest dose of unmitigated Shtetl romance ever since the Fiddler On The Roof, or possibly even Yentl. But Avidal ultimately decides on a neighbourhood watchman from her neighbourhood who confides that he has watched her ever since he was a boy. Murray on the other hand is kidnapped (or, in his case, old-kacker-napped) and put before a orthodox Jewish tribunal. All this was probably envisioned to be light-hearted cross-cultural entertainment, but to me it was a Dantean glimpse down into the pits of hell.
Quirky stuff here!! If you like oddball, this movie could appeal to you.Well-written and great musical accompaniment. John Turtorro does a Woody Allen – and does it well! It's a great assortment of extreme characters – particularly the women, from Sharon Stone and Sofia Vergara who play unrepressed hotties - to Vanessa Paradis who plays a repressed Hasidic Jewish woman. So there is a lot going on – and it definitely gets your attention. And it's never predictable! And really I don't quite know the point of the film – religion represses women could be one. Be prepared there are a lot of surprising antics!
John Turturro steps behind the camera, casting himself as a male prostitute and Woody Allen as his pimp. "Fading Gigolo" also looks at the mores of New York's Hasidic community (some of which sound like ideas from the Taliban). Allen's character is his usual self, while Turturro's clients - played by Sharon Stone and Sofía Vergara - remind one of Mrs. Robinson in "The Graduate".The main thing that I took from this movie is that Woody Allen does best when he simply tries to be funny. His movies got boring when he started focusing on neurotic rich people (don't even get me started on the god-awful "Everyone Says I Love You"). Although "Fading Gigolo" depicts such people, it's more of a satirical portrayal. Also, Allen does well in movies directed by other people: there's this one plus "What's New, Pussycat?", "Casino Royale", "The Front" and "Company Man". You'll like this one.I'd like to see Woody Allen make a horror flick. He would play a nebbish fleeing zombies (likely played by scream queens Adrienne Barbeau, Linnea Quigley, Jamie Lee Curtis, etc), and telling people that the zombies aren't as scary as producers who think that commercials qualify as art.
Brilliant movieOne of the best love stories ever madeI would challenge you to tell me of others .Terrific acting from John Turturro and some amazing acting from Vanessa Paradis.Greet movie describing the human condition from a variety of angles.Woody Allen is masterful in his genius exuding warmth and levity and propelling the movie forwardA masterful work of art Deserving of great recognition Full of wisdom and insights
