Wow! Such a good movie.
Absolutely the worst movie.
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
In the near future a lucrative business allows celebrities to sell their illnesses to obsessed fans. Interesting idea which I am sure could actually catch on in today's society, shocking & stupid as it sounds. This is the directional debut of Brandon Cronenberg, son of the great David. I think he's bitten off more than he can chew here. I think that the main character played by Caleb Landry Jones was a poor choice, not because of his acting skills, but he just too flat, devoid of interest. The other major flaw is that the film is slow. I was struggling with the last 20 minutes, to the point when the ending came I had lost interest. On the plus side the director does show some skill, no doubt there will be more - and better - to come from him.
The only thing that I can applaud about Antiviral is that it is a story that you never saw before. So for the innovating concept the movie can get some credits. But the actual outcome isn't by far any good as the idea of the movie. They could have done so much more and better with that story. The movie is way too slow and sometimes repetitive. I had to fight against falling asleep more than once during Antiviral and it was not because I was tired. The main character played by Caleb Landry Jones didn't do any good to the movie either. I thought his acting was very monotone and boring to watch. So with the potential of the script I can only be disappointed with the outcome.
Unfettered capitalism, Corporatism, the worship of anti-intellectualism and the "fetishization" of celebrity's ultimate result brilliantly portrayed in this futuristic film. Caleb Jones is absolutely perfect as the protagonist working at a corporation selling celebrity viruses to allow fans to feel close to their favourite stars by having the same viruses that they do. There are people who purposefully try to become HIV positive so I do not think this scenario is too far fetched. Caleb Jones as Syd March has an ethereal beauty and paleness allowing him to pull off the part impeccably as does Sarah Gadon as Hannah Geist the main star on exclusive contract with the Lucas Clinic. The mise-en-scene, with its clean clinical whiteness and modern design, mirrors how corporations would present their clinic to best market their product. Even their advertising and the clinic staff dialogue with clients seems to be exactly how the selling of celebrity viruses would take place. I take this film as a caricature of what we are becoming and it's not pretty.
If you have not seen this movie; you missed out on the future of adult themed movies. This is a legacy of a great director. David Cronenberg has been one of my favorite directors; and now his son is too.Is this the future of fans or just a nightmare? Or both? Disgusting at times. Isn't all idol worship disgusting? A fine line for mentally challenged people; for sure.I love the David Cronenberg type effects through out the movie. Sometimes the fake effect beats out the computer effect. This movie is a great example of that.I am looking forward to seeing more movies from this great director.
