Carry On Up the Khyber

Sir Sidney Ruff-Diamond looks after the British outpost near the Khybar pass. Protected by the kilted Third Foot and Mouth regiment, you would think they were safe, but the Khazi of Kalabar has other ideas—he wants all the British dead. But his troops fear the 'skirted-devils, who are rumoured not to wear any underwear.

The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.

This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

This Carry on is by far and away the best of the series. Crammed with gags from start to finish in good old Carry On tradition. The star of the show is Peter Butterworth whom in my opinion has to be the funniest character actor this country ever produced. His facial expressions along with his superb timing make him a comedy genius. The famous dining scene at the end has Peter at his brilliant best and superbly backed up by the brilliant Kenneth Williams and Cardew Robinson who was given some great lines. A real gem of a comedy. Best line Peter Butterworth replying to Capt Keane "Well I'm not standing around here waiting for mine to stiffen". Brilliant.

I like the Carry Ons, but I have to say that this doesn't hit the mark for me. I'd watched Follow That Camel a few days earlier and that really did make me laugh, but though this in theory should be funnier, and the jokes are all there, it just didn't tickle my funny bone. For one thing, the pretext is a bit infantile. Yeah, I know this is Carry On, but the idea that the British regiment have underwear under their kilts that arouses Afghan scorn just seems too silly to me. I guess if you knew a bit about the conflict this probably has some spoof on reality, as does the final dinner in which cannon balls drop around the fancy residence, but do you know what, I couldn't raise a chuckle. Again, Sid James working his way through a harem of willing women ought to be funny enough, but nah. And there's nothing wrong with Peter Butterworth leering and letching over a woman's breasts - this is Carry On after all - but in this movie it just seems rather horrible. It doesn't help that Roy Castle is standing in for Jim Dale. Castle is one of those Carry On additions who for me just don't work for some undiscernable reason, whereas the likes of Terry Scott were more than welcome. Comparing Castle to Dale is like comparing George Lazenby's Bond to Sean Connery's.The incidental music isn't as funny or jolly either. A lot of the time it mimics the chords of the James Bond theme, but not to much purpose.Carry On Up The Kyber is popular and it seems it appeals to those of a highbrow persuasion, rather like Carry On Cleo which I found sort of dragged, despite its high production values. It's as if we're meant to be laughing at the Brits, in an ironic kind of way, rather than mucking in.The theme might have been topical at the time, what with Sgt Pepper being released only the year before. Anyway, 'the British are used to cuts!' is one line that remains topical, under Cameron's coalition government.

As far as Carry on Films go, this one is the best I've seen. Nobody really takes them seriously as quality film-making or acting so that is why I am rating it 9/10 because as far as the plot, the humour and acting goes - this is the best in the Carry On series. Not too much to say about this otherwise. Same cast as usual, same sort of characters and same conflicts and situations. This time set in the Khyber pass region of Afghanistan/Pakistan involving the British occupation and the revolting locals. Some very funny and original scenes including my personal favourite and one of the most famous Carry On scenes when the Scottish regiment frightens off the revolting locals by lifting their kilts.British humour at its best and I recommend it to any Carry On fan.

This film is brilliant i laugh every time i watch it . The whole thing is amazing Kenneth Williams is amazing as the Khazi of Khalibar a very unusual name! Charles Hawtrey is excellent as private Widdle. Sid is Magicial as usual Joan is excellent in fact the whole cast are excellent. This is the one start with in my opinion if you have never watched a carry on before then watch carry on up the Kyhber you will not be disappointed. Its one of the best carry ons ever made this is what the series was all about. Much better then carry on England. The film is so well done that they can get away with pretending that Wales was India!!.
