It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
Our entire family, adults and teens, totally enjoyed this particular episode. Very creative and rejuvenating . Multiple laughs throughout - guilt free. The writing was crisp and 'out of the box' with laughs that target different age levels without pandering to any of them. In addition, the characterization of all four penguins and King Julien keeps enhancing their human quirkiness which just keeps getting more real each time. Then you capped it off with a wonderful life lesson about being your own individual. What great writing and characterization. It gave me the impression that the writers and actors probably had more fun putting it all together than we had enjoying the end results. What a fabulously innovative team of authors and actors. Well done!
