A Major Disappointment
It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
I happen to own a copy of the original novel of "Animal Farm". Back before big rival companies like DreamWorks or even mainstream anime were created, it was rare to find any animated movie in an age as long ago as the 1950's not made by Disney, or at least one that was particularly noteworthy. I admit that I don't read novels anymore, but this is a story so significant I can't forget it. My only complaints are that it is a bit too short. It seems like there could have been more ground covered, but it still delivers the goods. It was weird how there was little dialogue, but for the most part, it worked by setting the mood.In the modern age of CGI, we forget the time where traditionally animated films were all there was. This has animation that truly does hold up after all these decades. You could even compare it to the artwork of classic "Looney Tunes" cartoons released at the time. As the film is fairly short, it really does seem like some very long cartoon that would come before an actual film, only in a serious manner. This shows us how serious animation can be and how we should relish what it has done for us.The story is more or less the same as the book. Barn animals overthrow a farmer and are then ruled by pigs who turn out to be just as corrupt as the humans. Having read and studied the book in High School, I truly understand the meaning. The book is a classic and can never be surpassed, but this is certainly worth watching. Even if you are unaware of the symbolism behind Communist Russia or in more modern terms, a country like North Korea, it still holds up. History buffs such as myself can't pass it up. I know of citizens or maybe simply people who don't care about who controls them or how it's done. They didn't really change the ending, as simply add more to it.May the opposition of dictatorship live on forever! *** out of ****.
for a viewer from East Europe, it is not exactly only a good adaptation. it is not just a cartoon. but support for memories. and a warning. the book of George Orwell is always a must re-read. but the movie - piece from the Cold War is little more important than only animation film. convincing, in clothes of children movie, it represents in large measure a bitter parable who has new nuances, special force, more perspectives about the dark frame of dictatorship. in its case, the message is more important than artistic virtues. because it remains a powerful warning. not a decent/admirable adaptation, not an old film. but an useful tool for discover and understand the past and, maybe, for transform the future as better script.
George Orwell gave us a masterpiece about his strong ideologies which would become the basis of future. Animal Farm is one of my favorite books. But, its first adaptation, which is also the first animated feature of Britain just loses its way in the plot murdering the whole idea flat. What is the purpose of both a narrator & unkempt dialogs saying the same thing? This is surely a product of zero imagination. In an attempt to bake up a movie out of the popular novel, the husband-wife mar it with samples of cartoon characters. The music while the animals are working around made it feel like I was watching some cartoon TV series, with horrendous screenplay. Not to talk about repeated scenes, the lack of attention to details and plot points is just the dumbest thing to do. No character building, no sequence building and no mark of satire. Moreover, deflecting from the main theme, the idea Orwell had in mind, and suiting up additives, inferring a vague climax and deleting some pivotal plot points are the few things that keeps me from recommending anyone who's read the novel to watch this sheer mixture of CIA-guided nothings.Few things that I loved about it, anyways, are the speech quality, the drawings and the running time; thank heavens it ended in 60 minutes.BOTTOM LINE: Be happy with what the book offers: BRILLIANCE! And forget a movie was ever made.
"Animal Farm" is a story about how the animals in Manor Farm revolt against Mr. Jones- their owner. The animals have had enough of him and decided that they didn't want to serve humans anymore. The pigs of the farm leads the others barnyards animals a revolt against Mr. Jones. Together, all the animals fight against humans, in hopes for a better future. However, an unexpected tyranny occurs, led by one of their own kind.First of, this is NOT a children's movie. It is very dark and touches upon some sticky topics. To be honest, this movie freaked me out. Well, the book did. Thinking about it, the movie felt very lacking for me. I don't think I would have understood the movie if I hadn't read the book first. If you really want to watch this film, I suggest maybe reading the book first.I must say though, the movie was a very good summary of all the important parts in the book. However, I found that I missed the little details. I had wanted to see some characters, but was disappointed to see that they weren't included in the movie. For me, there felt to be no character/animal development. How sad. I also did not like the ending. Creative license or not, I still believe that they should have stuck to the book's original ending. The movie would have made more impact that way.Viewed on: July 28, 2011
