It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

(*Movie quote that set the tone of this film's story*) - "Let white man take care of white man's troubles!"Out of The Chase's total running time of 135 minutes - I'd say that its dreary, small-town, soap opera story only rose above that mediocrity for about 10 of those many minutes. It's true.Marlon Brando's irksome, phone-in performance aside - Am I the only one who got so sick to death of hearing the name "Bubber" being spoken by just about everyone (and their dog) in the horrid, little town of Tarl, Texas? Eh? Am I!?And, speaking about "Bubber" - IMO - Only a babbling idiot (which I guess "Bubber" was) would head straight back to his hometown after breaking out of prison. Like - DUH!!??All-in-all - 1966's The Chase was total brain-dead idiocy from start to finish.

"The Chase" is one of the better films during this rather lean period in the career of Marlon Brando. He is given dialogue which is above average, he has a character to play and he gives the best performance. Brando is well supported by Angie Dickinson, Miriam Hopkins, E.G Marshall and Richard Bradford (just a short time away from making his name in his show of "Man in a Suitcase). The narrative is all over the place though. There are far too many irrelevant characters who have little to do. James Fox, Jane Fonda and Robert Redford are rather wasted. Redford in particular as he is meant to be a main factor in the story. He plays a convict who has escaped from prison and is heading toward his home town. However, he is absent from the film for long periods of time. He doesn't reach his home town until near the end! Jane Fonda having an affair with James Fox is completely pointless and irksome. How she gets billed second is anyone's guess. At the said town, Brando as the local sheriff has a lot to deal with - racial prejudice and feelings of anger about Redford being amongst his problems. Brando hates where he is stationed and dislikes most of the locals with their bigoted ways. He is trying not to cave in under pressure from the local bigwigs in how to deal with the escaped convict but he receives little support. Only his wife (Dickinson) stands by him. Robert Duvall is cast against type here. Usually, he played unsympathetic people but in "The Chase," he is actually more intelligent and peaceful. His performance is good. Richard Bradford takes the honours as a racist thug who likes to take the law into his own hands. The film does work itself up to a good and gritty climax. Arthur Penn's direction is good but his best work was yet to come. The scene where Brando gets savagely beaten is graphic by 1966 standards and I can imagine that both the American and British Film Censors weren't too happy about the violence. Altogether, a rather depressing film that wallows in its own world of despair and hopelessness.

This is a really, really awful film. More of a TV movie than a big screen motion picture. I gave it four stars out of ten and I think I am being generous. Brando appeared in some really second rate movies during the sixties and this certainly is one of them. There are a brick load full of talented actors and familiar faces but there is not enough story to keep them from doing anything but cameo appearances. There was a great deal of disagreement and tension between the producer, the writer, and the director and it certainly shows . It's probably one of the worst examples of ensemble acting I have ever seen. Its just a bunch of actors reciting lines. There is no chemistry or cohesion. The ending is so bad that you will be convulsed with laughter."The Chase" makes "Robot Monster" look like "Gone with the Wind"

"The Chase" is the story of a sheriff who has to fight against the town's vigilante-ism and ignorance while pursuing a notorious criminal. It kind of reminded me of both "High Noon" and "The Ox Bow Incident," if you're familiar with either or both of them. Marlon Brando is his usual great as the small-town sheriff with a strong sense of justice. And as is the case with a lot of Brando films, he attracted a particularly strong group of supporting actors, often cast against type. For example, the normally clean-cut E.G. Marshall is the evil overlord of the town, and the normally ultra-strong Robert Duvall is a weak and passive husband/employee. Janice Rule is great as the town slut, ignoring and insulting her own husband while crawling over everyone else's in a tight and dangerously low-cut dress. Her role is a particularly important one, because her come-ons and overtures are often brushed off by the husbands and ignored by their wives, as though this town has gotten used to questionable behavior and has completely lost its moral compass. One of the stars of this film is Jane Fonda, who is a strong screen presence and a very good actor. It's the "girl who everyone thinks is loose and lazy but there's actually more to the story than everyone thinks" role, and she plays it well. It's a shame her career got derailed overall the Vietnam War controversy. She was off to a highly promising start here.Robert Redford's role is pretty much exactly the same as his role in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid": Charming criminal running away from the law. And he plays it pretty much exactly the same way.The movie script was written by Lillian Hellman, with her usual contempt for powerful people, capitalists, and their hangers-on, but I have to admit it's pretty strong. (See the Quotes section of the IMDb web site for a few memorable lines). However, the production really isn't that great, and has an overall fake feeling. It looks like everything is taking place on a cheap Hollywood movie set. Filming in a real small town location might have helped. Also, many of the critical evening scenes near the end of the movie seem to be taking place in a small darkened studio, and don't look or feel at all like they were actually filmed at night.Still, a good film, and very much worth your time.
