The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.

It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...

I couldn't remember if I'd seen "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning" before. After watching it, I'm still not sure. It's that kind of movie, but then none of the recent "Chainsaw" retreads have had anything to distinguish one from the other. This one, I guess, is supposed to be a prequel to the classic original, which was made (and set) in 1974. "The Beginning" is set in the '60s, with two characters who are staring down the barrel of an imminent tour of duty in Vietnam. All setting the movie closer to the time of the original "Texas Chainsaw" does it make it look more like garbage by comparison. That movie was made on a shoe-string budget, and yet it was a work of genius with style to spare. It wasn't even that violent, and yet the film's atmosphere was so oppressive that people let their imaginations do the work, and Tobe Hooper spoke of fans coming up to him and describing brutally violent scenes that they swore were in the movie, but in fact, were not.Alas, this prequel, if that's what it is, does nothing to ignite the imagination. It's a tedious, humdrum, dreary affair, which doesn't even really get the violence right. It would have cost millions. Why not go crazy with the gore? Face it: that's the only reason anyone watches this stuff. Why not let them have it? Sure, it has some pretty violent bits toward the end of the movie, but you have to wait so long to see it, and you'll probably be asleep by then.Lee Tergesen, of "Oz" and "Generation Kill" and "Weird Science", has a strange walk on role that is not utilised at all. Knowing what a great actor he is, why did they cast him and give him nothing to do?R. Lee Ermey is really the main antagonist of the film, but I think by 2006 he was really long past his intimidating heyday. He looks like a sad and angry old man, not the demon the movie requires.Leatherface, never really allowed to be the 'star' of these films like Freddy or Jason were the stars of theirs, is predictably pushed into the background, showing up every once in a while when someone needs to die.

I expected gore from a Texas Chainsaw movie, but not this much. The amount of gore, ugly deaths, killing and blood in this movie are over the top. The whole psycho family is scary enough just by looking at their way of acting and living, but Tomy, the killer is the real deal... brace yourselfes for a real horror journey. I must admit the story is cringe enough, but I expected nothing more and nothing less, since that is the not main point of the movie.

I am giving this a 10, because the rating for it on here is absurd. It is easily a 7-9 film, but has a rating on here of less than 6?????How does this film get voted so low? Because it is very gory? That is the main complaint I see, or that it didn't bring anything new to the series. Really? I thought this was one of the most memorable and disturbing ones in a long time. This one is light years beyond the stupid crap sequels added on to the original. Even the other reboot with Jessica Biel was decent, I thought. Strange how people can see things so differently. The original Tobe Hooper film is OK, but nothing extra in retrospect. It kind of got lucky and opened up a cheap, gritty slasher market, but it wasn't really brilliant film making or better than these 2000s films. This one is very bloody, but I didn't feel it devolved into a torture porn for the sake of torture. I thought it told a lot of disturbing backstory, with a really gritty and disturbing film quality and this Leatherface is truly scary and brings HUGE(Literally) stage presence. There are some plot holes, like all films, but overall, I thought this was great compared to many others. R. Lee Ermey as the sadistic sheriff was awesome. Who could hate his character??? Both funny and darkly terrifying in one blend. I was on the edge of my seat and glued to the movie screen when I went to see this with a date for the first time. In fact, it had her curled up and kissing me after the show, and we were both really unnerved, and still terrified a bit while necking in the car out in the country later on. How some films have a 9 up here, and this has a 5, I will never understand.
